' Brutal Doom 64 ', which according to SGt, "revitalizes the old Doom 64 with new special effects, particles, lightning, gore, new sounds, more weapon animations (shotgun reloads, smoother minigun barrels, etc.) and monsters and stuff cut from the original Nintendo 64 version". To coincide with this news, a new alpha footage tease has been released, and from what we've seen looks rather good!
It feels very satisfying, the many particles and how the bodies react to the hits is just great, as always. The rest is still the same of course, with its pros and cons (the level design can be awkward/contrived at times, and there's focus on a more horror-like formula that was later adopted and brought to the extreme by Doom 3). The improvements are really big though, there's so much oomph when shooting
The shooting in that video looks so much more satisfying than most modern shit.
fuck I'm trying to remember a shooter that is just... well a shooter. It's like every fucking release now is
- Loot Hunting / stat given weapons... ruin the shooting mechanics.
- Maximum Maximum mode... get in the way of the shooting mechanics.
- AWESOME glory kills.. "but i just want to shoot?..." wrong you must press E on glowing enemies after you shoot them
- Magical fucking powers that you need to level up..
There is nothing out there, and hasn't been in over a decade that's anything like doom. I want, guns that are guns, no ironsights, trap rooms, varied monsters and AI and enough challenge where you conserve / choose weapons sparingly. I don't think its going to happen though, all games must have RPG, Loot some bullshit to ruin the shooting element.
SoF 2 tried to be more realistic with Mullins involved from the beginning rather than being a shooter with semi-realistic well gameplay I guess.
First game is a bit more fun as a result although Ghoul 2.0 is probably still unsurpassed in it's display of gore in Soldier of Fortune 2, and also Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy with the "g_saberrealisticcombat" cvar set. (Well you don't get 13 different types of damage zones in the head alone in a Star-Wars game but it still allowed for some spectacular lightsaber usage although said cvar trivialized most fights as long as you weren't the one getting hit. )
EDIT: SoF 2 also used a seed generator to make "unlimited" but fairly simple quick mission you could attempt.
SoF 2 has a better damage system/gore and this funky mix of early ragdoll/death animations, but SoF 1 is more arcady and a bit faster in terms of speed. Plays more like Brutal Doom than the second Sof.
Hell yes! SoF's shotgun is probably the meatier thing ever witnessed in first person shooters. Dat sound effect and gore. Speaking of which, there's the Community Edition iso which is ready to play with all the goodies for modern systems (can't post the link because yarr, but it's the first result on Google )
Aside from the usual Doom, Quake and Unreal etc, I always find myself returning to FEAR (only the first one), which is pretty much the complete and unrivaled package when it comes to playing around with the AI almost sandbox-style. Same for Crysis, or the classic MoH AA and the likes to remember about the good old times when military shooters weren't shallow hollywood productions.
Modern AAAish shooters that retain the classic cinematic-free formula really are a rare breed, almost nonexistent. I can only recall Shadow Warrior 2013, Hard Reset, Rise of the Triad Remake and Doom 2016 (minus the derp glowing thing).
If one doesn't mind story driven parts and cutscenes, I'd say Wolfenstein: The New Order, the Metro games and Singularity are more examples of multiplatform pew pewers where shooting is done fairly well in my opinion.
Brutal Doom 64 Update 1, which has new sounds such as new firing sounds for the pistol, added hitboxes for Zombies and Imps, better textures re-imported all textures from D64 Absolution in .png format, better lens flares on lamps and further improvements listed
