The ESRB's decision to give Manhunt 2 an Adults Only rating in the US seems to have already sent shockwaves throughout the industry about what it can and can't get away with. Condemned: Bloodshot senior producer, Constantine Hantzopoulos, tells CVG that a few features have already been pulled from the game in light of the ESRB / Manhunt situation.
During E3 we met up with Hantzopoulos for a look at Condemned: Bloodshot. For us the original was a prize pick of the 360 launch line-up and we're looking forward to the second one. But we were keen to know if the Manhunt ban made him think twice about how far the brutal aspect of Condemned's gameplay could be pushed. Would the ban make him (and other developers) think twice about what he could get away with?

"Absolutely it did," he told CVG. "And one of the things I want to make clear is that this does not take place in the real world. This is a fictional universe. That said we're pretty cognisant of the ESRB and the Manhunt thing."
Hantzopoulos has been on the wrong end of the ESRB in the past. "I worked on Fahrenheit (known as Indigo Prophecy in the States) and had to cut the sex scenes out of the game for the US. Yes, I was the guy that did that. It sucked because I don't believe in that, right. But you've got to do what you've got to do. We're working closely with the ESRB to make sure everything goes through okay but there's stuff we've cut already. There were things we were doing that even I couldn't believe we were going to those places."
When asked for examples of what we might now never see in a game again, we were told, "An example of what we cut would be putting someone's head in a vice. That was too much, you know. There are also some decapitations we've lost. But this is more Sin City than it is real world and we want people to know that this is not a real world.
"Manhunt kind of takes place in a real world where you're killing prisoners and people. This is a sensitive subject and we'll pull back if we need to. If someone says we can't that, we'll pull back a little. We're actually in pretty good shape. Putting someone in a dumpster is comical, it's funny. But putting someone through a TV set..."

Read this a while ago and I was under the impression that the ESRB/PEGI system was more of a guideline but I suppose that the potential customer/revenue loss due to a AO rating (since a few larger stores refuse to stock such titles) was what made them change the game content to get a lower rating such as Mature or perhaps even Teen though that is unlikely seeing the darker mood and violent nature of the Condemned serie.
(BTW, isn't it only for X360/PS3 systems? but I suppose it will be ported to PC eventually.)

ESRB is such a complete joke. Like the ratings actually really work. Just the the Movie Rating system. They give NR ratings to films with girl/girl sex. But give R ratings to films that blow's peoplle heads off, man/woman sex, cursing, etc.

anyway whats the big deal? some folks cant see the beauty of a naked fat,ugly pig with a chainsaw running with a chainsaw after u. Or some highlight criminalistic game that could serve as purpose to any kid willing to be a CSI or FBI investigator when it grows up. We are talking about 21 century for crying out loud what hasnt been seen by a kid on tv or internet?. Rockstar, Eidos and the Condmnd franchise by Sega arent going to make a dangerous thing of it, just pushing the limits to a better entertainment and hell that is!. Better than movies nowadays if u ask me.

Other countries don't go around sayin we believe in freedom of speech and you're gonna have it too...or else . . . this weird system of 'voluntary censorship' means that freedom of speech is more restricted there than anywhere else and it is removed from real oversight and input by ordinary people. When the censor where I live threatened to ban Postal 2 I got hold of his office and the media and tore a strip offa him. No games had been banned before and he wanted to look like he was doing something.
He tried to justify the action by claiming the games retailers thought it was a good idea which is typical since Postal games are a minority interest. Better Postal be the sacrificial lamb than GTA 57 or whatever... weak pricks.
I had as much input as I wanted to make myself or thru the media. The industry self regulatory model is dictatorial , self serving and corrupts the system which is why it has thrived in amerika. The entertainment industry loves it. Decisions are made exactly as they were trying to make them here... on the basis of what can we do to look good without it costing us. That means Manhunt and Condemned cop it big time cause they don't move as many units as GTA which has been given more chances than one of the drunken blond 'actresses'.
