Done it, couldn't just justify the cost of legit micro$oft drive so this was way better choice.

It works, but of the five people I know of who've done it all have been banned. It's useful if you don't care about Live.

Chances are you wont be banned for a homemade harddrive. As for your 5 friends Lyrics they should not have been on live with modded firmware. As of yet there have been no cases of umodded 360s with homemade hardrives being banned only people sporting flashed firmware.

It's impossible to ban you for having the 120GB hack drive, as the hack drive uses the SAME firmware/key from a legit drive -- that's the whole point. It's like spoofing, but for HDDs instead of the DVD drive.

And a spoofed drive has never been banned?

Well no one can know whether the bans are due to the HDD hack or the FW hack, but it's a really strange coincidence MS decided to ban them after the HDD hack. Not that they were banned a day after teh HDD hack of course, but some of the five I know have been using the FW hack since the original release.

Well seeing as how, when you spoof the key, the new drive *IS* the spoofed one .. it's impossible to tell them apart .. then I don't see how you could ban for it. Once you've flashed the firmware to the drive or the HDD, it then *becomes* that drive.

Maybe they used the same key to flash several drives, that could be a reason for tagging. If every drive has a unique key of course. As for why they all used the same key, to get the entire 120GB you'll need a key from a 120GB drive. If you use your own 20GB drive for this purpose, the Xbox will only see 20GB of the 120GB available. I have no idea what they did though, just speculating here. I never bothered to read the specifics of this hack.

the microsoft drive is only around £60-70 here in the uk now and the WD is at least £37. I can see how this hack was worth it when the MS one was £120 but now its dropped the saving isnt really worth the hassle i don't think.

Not being funny, but where did you find those prices?
Best I can find, new, is £87 (including postage) for the 120Gb.

i've done it yesterday with a 250 gb WD , since thats the cheapest bevs drive my dealer had in stock. i know its a waste of space but the drive was 43 euro.
it was a bit of a hassle , since i havent used hex since the 90s , but works like a charm now . LIVE works no problem as well

Surely it Could easily ban as a huge percentage of these users would have the same hddss.bin . But Too many negatives
would you ban the console or the hdd ? people share hdd's and banning the console would be silly
What about chinese ebay stores sellings 120gb hdd's that use this method . people could be duped with it
No real harm comes from them , You have more space . you can buy more videos from live , more arcade games and more DLC basically

Whats the point off using your own hddss.bin
If you have a 20 gb drive it will reformat your new 120> drive back down to 20 . You will need hddss.bin from a 120gb hard drive which you obviously won't have

Great argument there . Really put me in my place
As far as I'm aware you need a 120gb hddss.bin from a valid elite drive ( feel free to input here if I'm wrong , Since its signed and all you can't alter your own hddss.bin to magically match the serial to a 120gb drive....)
Now you have a 20gb or 60 gb hard drive . why in the world would you use this hddss.bin in your new drive . It will format the drive back to the size of your original as the ss contains both the serial and size restrictions.
Hence there is no point of dumping your own . You obtain the very public 120 hddss.bin from the net and use this....
