Bohemia Interactive have just announced a free-to-play version of their outstanding war sim. It’s going to be totally free, but 100% ARMA.
According to the developers “Arma 2: Free redefines the free-to-play battlefield with its truly unrivalled scale and gameplay possibilities. Arma 2: Free serves up almost everything offered by the original Arma 2 – the ’13th best PC game of all time’, according to PC Gamer – minus the campaign, HD graphics and support for user-made addons and mods.”
Despite the lack of HD graphics, ARMA 2: Free still looks like a handsome game. And even though mods aren’t supported, there’ll still be opportunity to create your own missions and scenarios to play through with squad mates.
Most exciting of all though, is that ARMA 2: free will be completely free. Not just free-to-play – there are no micro-transactions in sight. This is especially exciting news because now everyone will get a chance to sample the simulated delights of warfare. I’ve attempted to force the PC Gamer UK office into ARMA 2 sessions many times. Now they have no excuse. We can only assume that Bohemia Interactive can afford this kind of awesomeness thanks to the recent announcement of ARMA 3; check out some fresh screenshots of that PC behemoth here.
We’ve sent Tim over to the Bohemia Interactive booth at E3 – we’ll have more on ARMA 2: Free soon.
Fuck the graphics! Game was running like shit when it got released (don't know how it runs now with all the patches and the addon). If it looks like it does in the trailer, then I'm more than pleased with it. At least, if there isn't another hidden catch!

i wanna go through gamestopping bugs, low fps, unfinished ideas, poor coding .I wanna be tortured i wanna spend all day trying to make a game playable, i wanna w8 for 200 patches and mods to fix their laughable product etc. yeah this was my dream until arma 2 came out. When u try to make a complicated and enjoyable sim that involves a wide variety of things first ask urself can i pull it off.
Never had gamestopping bugs, low fps. But some people did have it. As for the "unfinished ideas" yes, maybe, but because I saw a 1000x more, that were definitely "finished" ideas and working well,l I didn't give much importance to the unfinished ones. I wouldn't call poor code, only it gets time to get optimized. Yes, I like when developers support long their product after launching, even if it takes 200 patches.
But haters gonna hate.

Nah - youi don't wanna do that - you just wanna waste your fuckin' day waffling about a game you don't like... You have a problem I think.

You have to admit that the SP was pretty broken when it got released. Mostly because of the AI. And it happened to everyone sooner or later.
But! The game got shitloads of patches/updates since then. So Nightderp's comments aren't valid in the slightest.

I admit that part of the campaign was broke, and that the AI got better with each new patch.
I admit also that ArmA 2 is far from being perfect. But when we think about the aim, the scope that this game tries to achieve, will have to close the eyes to some less polished features. This is a game done by small developers with limited resources, specially when comparing with AAA titles. I find quite amazing what they really achieve.
I'm pretty sure it's the same as the "free" expansion content for ArmA 2, you get most of it (Aside from the campaign and missions.) but the LOD model is reduced one step and textures are 128x128 (Was updated to 256x256 in a later patch, most are 2048x2048 at the highest - also called default though this in accordance with how they're not altered - option.)
I own the whole series and it runs fine. Some people will complain about anything simply to keep an argument going.Others complain about it because it isn't a dumbed down Call Of Duty or MOH shooter......wahhhhh!Fact is its the best infantry simulation of all time. For you non-owners its free, what more do you want?
