If you read the thread it looks like they are claiming this is to do with piracy protection but it's also listed as a bug. I'd be interested in testing this just to see whether it's true or not.
Just saw on their forums that one of the developers confirmed they have incorporated piracy triggers in the game that cause all kinds of shit to happen. Like, bottom table teams qualify in Euro compet ...
