I am not that far in the game, wouldn't mind losing my save games if I knew for sure that performance would improve... and it seems it won't.
I get 70 to 100 FPS in DX8 mode, and only 15 to 25 FPS ... |

The fact that only a portion of your total disk space is being seen by Windows setup, is due to no SATA drivers being included in plain XP. Setup then uses the standard SCSI drivers instead.
