The patch (included) is supposed to resolve two issues:
Default controls - keyboard only.
Repeated lockups for a minute or two.

If graphics don't matter, try Car & Driver. You'll need a 386 or better with at least 4mb ram  I used to have hours of fun just cruising down the interstate.

The short answer is - there are no games like Elite any more. Elite was stunning because there was nothing else like it at the time. Personally I thought Frontier was even better than Elite.
