I'm using a standard PSX Dual Shock pad with a $10 psx->usb adapter. Works like a charm , and very inexpensive if you've got a psx controller lying around.
Tactical combat is certainly more fun, but auto combat has worked pretty well in the Civ series so far. I don't think it'll be too much of a detriment, certainly not a make or break feature consideri ...
