I just hope we don't have to wait for a patch to actually have decent gameplay. It seems like every game I play right now is expected to be patched to better playability at some point that is not the present.

I can't believe people actually liked the music and the interface. Is the music different in the full game compared to the demo? Because the demo music was so poor.
If I am to guess, I would guess they need a few patches before its really ok to play, relax people its just a GUESS. And you are right, thats usually how things go nowadays.

It lets me toggle MSAA in DX10/11 mode - so that's strange.
Then again, DX-11 mode sees my 3.5Ghz Quad/ GTX 460 SLI setup dip into the low 30's when zoomed in. It's not like framerate is important in this type of game, I'm just not sure what the fuck is THAT graphically intensive to warrant it. |
No idea, but maybe it has something to do with the SLI setup. Those tend to be quirky sometimes.

Thanks for all the laughs guys. I enjoy reading about your pain and suffering while I am waiting for the AI turn to HURRY THE F UP! I bought the game, its like the grail for me. I wish a scene release would post though, steam wont run for S! on my laptop. Games fine, steam no.

What resolution?
I'm on 1920x1200 on an i7-930 @ 3.5ghz, gtx 460 sli (latest drivers).
It could very well be the DX11 Tessellation that's bogging it down, as I know that raped the frame-rate on AVP as well. I'll mess with it a bit more when release comes out and see if that's the culprit. It was at 60 when zoomed in on the first turn, then second turn after I explored a bit it dropped to mid 30's and stayed there for the next 100 turns. Weirdness.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Do you have an idea if the cracked game will be playable online/via lan ? (not asking for crystal ball but maybe some of you know about the protection it will use)

Check the Steam.exe and ensure that Vista/XP compatiblity mode isn't enabled on the executable itself. That's what causing issues with people unable to launch into DX10 mode.

I had to update to the latest Nvida drivers in order to fix huge slowdown issues in DX10/11

Internet games are handled through Steam, but there's also a LAN mode, according to the manual.
Whether Hamachi will work on it, however, is yet to be seen, obviously.

So i played 100 turns of the demo, managing to take one of the enemies cities at prince level.
Although i prefere the one unit per title, and hex titles i am kinda dissapointed. This game seems kinda slow, and now that the AI no longer have the unit stack to threaten you with, he seems kinda weak. He placed a damaged siege unit right next to me, instead of retreating into his empty city, and overall he just seems very bad. the game seems smaller somehow. I was strongly concidering buying this game, once i have tried the demo, now i will download and give it some more hours before i decide.
Thumbs down so far, hope that changed, as i have been a big fan of this game since civ 1

Well, the AI was never the strongest part of this game. Saying the other series was good, and this is bad 'cause of AI makes you look silly. Of course that siege think is disappointing, but i'm sure they'll fix it.
The one unit per tile is brilliant, but i'm biased since i'm a warmonger and this new chess way of making war makes the game much alive. Still i only played the demo, and it's to early to give a final verdict, but so far it's not better nor worst than every other civ, just different.

Everyone who says this game is missing something should understand that comparing V to Beyond the Sword will take you nowhere. More wiser would be comparing it to vanilla IV with no patches at all. Fourth game of the series has been updated with two expansions and A HUGE PILE of patches to make it what it is today. If you compare to vanilla IV, you understand that there is a lot of content in V there wasn't in IV when it was released and everybody can be quite sure there will be a lot of patching and expansion to come for civilization V.
And then there are the things called opinions, some of the additions and removals in V are not technically bad choices compared to previous games, some people just DON'T LIKE THEM. If someone prefers the way things were done in CivIV, you should just probably play that one, it's so polished in it's current state that I don't think you can make it any better with the exception of graphics and Blue Marble fixes that if graphics really are so important for you in a TBS-game.
I Think CiV is the best version of the series to date with it's 1UPT, hexes, social policies, removal of religion (I always hated religion) and the new UI with the updated civilopedia that is almost perfect for me.

Played the demo twice, like
- GUI though wish it would be a little more detailed in city screen in order to avoid mouse overs to get detailed stats.
- Music. While it's playing it doesn't grab to much focus on itself.
- Pace. At standard speed game feels almost like Civ 4 on Epic.
- Maintenance costs and phasing out of commerce sliders. Now it's not a good idea to spam buildings in cities.
- Hexes, 1UPT rule and ranged attacks. Combat is so much better now.
Diplomacy is indeed feels awkward, plus I encountered a "borderline" state bugs - one turn foreign civ terminates open borders agreement, next turn offers to open them just to terminate such agreement again next turn
Performance wise demo runs very well in DX 10 / 11 mode at 1680x1050 on Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 8800GTS 512MB. All video options are at their defaults(leader scene quality, terrain tessellation level, terrain shadow quality and water quality are at medium, everything else at high) values + 2X MSAA + VSync turned off.
Changing any of video options kills Anti-Alising for me, AA setting only takes effect with video options at their default values VSync option still can be changed without killing AA, and turning it off gives enormous speed bump. I have never seen such dramatic effect in any other game Also game makes my GPU fan go insane, even in Crysis it was much quieter

Not quite sure why that makes me look silly.
there is a stronger need for the AI to be better now, where it no longer has the stack to threaten you with. Also as i said i have only played 100 turns, when it is released i will play a game and re-evaluate

Hope not, only played civ4 coop, which was great btw, no more waiting for each others turn.. This game will shine when we get mods like rise of mankind etc. Civ games are usually only okay to good before you throw in an expansion or two + mods, then it becomes excellent.
