So yesterday I tried to pay for some stuff I bought. The transaction was denied. I tried again. It was again denied.
Checked my bank account using the bank app, it was empty.
Some inbred fuckers stole my debit card data and apparently used it to pay for airline tickets, leaving me with a few eurocents. Now I know I can issue a chargeback, but that will take time during which I'll probably have to eat carboard, since my rainy day fund covers bills, not food.
Oh no! That’s terrible!
Do you know how they’ve obtained the debit card information? That’s the first thing to track and disable, before anything else. Most banking systems require you declare the card as compromised, and start counting days back from the declaration day. So do that ASAP also.
Scrimming is probable, the card was "used" in Barcelona, and for half a year I was on a contract in Spain. But that was a year ago so maybe it's a coincidence and the details leaked during a data breach on some shops, I did sometimes use just my card data if there was no other way. Or used paypal, but using balance, not an attached card. My bank shoud use 3D Secure in those cases though! Which is not infallible, but I shoud get some warning.
I always bought stuff in established shops though, not totallynotscammers.pl or chinese stores.
The money is one thing, the other is I'll have to be paranoid with my purchases form now on.
Yup Leo, When I saw this I immediately blocked my card. It's useless anyway, it's just an atm card so not possible to overdraw. Gonna go to my bank in a few sleepless hours, then to the police (I've read it's a requirement, not that I believe they'll find some scumbags) and report it.
Absolutely no idea who stole the money. Hope they get supercancerhepatohivtitis and die slowly though.
You might want to look what services your bank provides. Some banks allow creating silo debit cards with a specific sum, and so if one is stolen, only the predefined sum is stolen. Still annoying but at least not all the money.
Maybe I'll just use two accounts, one with an attached card, one without. Or see what banks offer the option you speak of. Apparently I can't live how I lived anymore. I guess I should be "glad" they stole money from my card, not straight from my account. Should be easier to get back.
Yes, the other option is to have two or more accounts, and transfer funds into the account with the card. If you live in Europe, can't you move to a cashless lifestyle with the Apple Pay/Google Pay/Samsung Pay? Those are practically impossible to steal, you don't have to deal with credit, and no cash is always a good option.
Thankfully the chargeback is in Visa's hands, I think.
But I will have to wait a few days to a month. Or more. I dread the fact I'll have to waste time on this.
And yeah, Paypal is shit. Unless you're the one who wants to scam someone, that is.
I actually used Gpay, but it wasn't always an option. In Poland we also have BLIK, where you don't use a card or account details, but you can't use it everywhere. I was reasonably cautious, but there was a weak link somewhere anyway.
If I didn't check my account I'd be in deep shit in a few hours. I was planning to go and renew a bullshit maritime certificate today. I have my train ticker, so If I hadn't checked my account I'd be stuck 300km from home with no money, since I usually just have my phone or card.
Weel, I went to the bank. Since the money is not booked yet, just blocked, they told me I'll have to wait until it's booked and they know the transaction is succesfull before I start a chargeback. They can't do anything about it now.
After that it should be no problem. I also contacted Volotea, the site that was apperently used to buy the tickets and informed them of fraud. This will most likely do nothing, since not all companies have fraud prevention departments, but my mind is calmer now.
I just have to wait now. Fuck, I had plans for this week, now I just have to survive
Thankfully the bills are paid.
It should. Every time I used it previously it sent me a 3D Secure confirmation. Now nothing.
With Paypal no, no confirmation. And as it turns out even if I had put strict limits on spending there's some fuckery that allows a card being used over the net to somehow omit transaction limits if it's used abroad.
The more I know the more I want to keep my money in an old sock. Seems it will be just as safe

I have a Revolut card for that - just top up the account from time to time with a bit of money, not much more than I need for my nearest payment. So if the card data leaks - they can only get up to the pennies I have on the account. My friends go even further - they freeze the virtual card when not using, since it's a single tap in the application.
no coincidence my bank changed it card from visa to mastercard, visas customer protection is unsurpassed and my bank was like fuck that shit, we dont want to give back monies
paypals security is complete shit, especially if u have a credit card linked to the account as all it takes is email and a password to empty the account n card, they do have semi decent customer protection in fraud where they most of the time take the side of the customer.
I think the best system is these virtual credit cards u can set up for one time use. But ofcourse very few people offer it and when in doubt, always visa
banks are the biggest cunts, when they fuck up and send u money by accident, they will always get their money back and send ur ass to jail if u spend it, if u fuck up and send moneyto a wrong account, u can forget about ur monies without courts involved ...
bendi make sure to not just talk to ur bankl but also visa directly, u never know, maybe ur bank is covering its ass to get out of visa costs and stalling for time

It has to go through the bank. If it was a credit card then yes, since that would belong to VISA, but it was just a debit/atm card. Visa will do a chargeback, but the bank is the actual owner so they will issue the request in my name once they know the transaction went through.
I asked people who had similar problems, they confirmed it has to be like this.
u know the saddest part, the merchants, they already shipped that shit and will get double fucked, charge back fee and merchandise gone and shipping fee payed
i dont get why most merchant actually dont wait a few days just to make sure the card isnt stolen. or maybe an insurance against this.
some adolescant instagram punks n hoes airbnbing on merchants and ur dime ...
so any smart crimegang gets teenagers to use the cards, and teenagers cant legaly buy or sell stuff anyway or get harsh sentences and it just keeps going
was your pin also compromized ? must have been a rigged atm then perhaps

how about no? link your mobile number as 2fa and every time you login it sends you a code via sms. without that code no login, not even in the mobile app on your phone (sure if someone has your unlocked phone + paypal credentials or cut off you finger to fool the fingerprint sensor you are fucked)
Why don't you have another account with more money? Just have lots of money in several accounts.
and thats a good point too, have most of my money on account which still has only a paper bank book. and my main bank account is splitted into three different accounts too where the main one which is attached to my card and paypal + some online stores and has only a small balance and the rest is in sub accounts only accessable at my bank or online which is double secured too (every transaction needs a unique tan which is generated with an app on my phone which needs different login + fingerprint/pin and everything gets shut down instantly if my phone is tampered [which means no custom rom for me ]
so imho the only change that i can get fucked is by skimming, but since im a lazy ass person i do not travel a lot and when i do i take enough money with me so that i dont need any card.sometimes i use google pay, thats attached to my paypal but still needs unlocked phone + nfc enabled + pin.
