|
 |
This is an old guide. If you still haven't figured a way to install Vista by now, you ought to stay with Windows 98 and be happy.
I'm creating this thread as a guide to people trying to install Vista with a crack.
THIS IS NOT A VISTA SUPPORT THREAD IN THE USUAL WAY! It is ment solely for the purpose of guiding users how to install Vista, and the problems dealing with the immediate problems caused by the installation.
Q: What Vista release should I get?
A: I recommend the BillGates release with the MSDN patch, as it uses the original installer made by MS. The WinBeta AIO release is fine as well, but it uses custom installer which is somehow not too compatible with VMWare. The Pantheon release is good as well.
Q: Do all those releases include all versions of Vista, or do I have to get a special All-in-One release?
A: No, all releases include all the avaible SKUs (such as Ultimate, Home Premium, etc). They are determined at setup, when you not enter a serial. If you seek the 64-bit editions of Vista though, you'll have to find a 64-bit release, or the WinBeta AIO release.
Q: Do I need a valid serial to install and use Vista?
A: No, Vista allows you to install it without a serial and use it for a grace period of 30 days. If you choose not to insert a serial in the installation, it will ask you which SKU you have purchased. To extend the 30 days grace period, you need a crack. Some cracks allow you to activate Vista just as it was genuine purchase.
Q: Is there a working crack for Vista?
A: Yes, there are working cracks. They involve installing a BIOS emulator to fool Vista into thinking you have a certain BIOS, so it would activate.
Q: Where do I get the crack?
A: Get it from the official AntiWPA forum.
Q: Hey, I've seen a crack called "XXXXXX," which states it is better than the cracks you recommend, and is easier to use. Should I use that instead?
A: Most cracks are just a GUI for one of the two cracks available (Paradox and the loader), so they should be fine as well. Just make sure there's an uninstaller, so you could remove the crack and replace it with newer versions should they come along.
Q: Can I use Windows Updates with the crack?
A: As of 26/01/08, you still can. MS has not yet issued a patch to render the cracks useless, however they have stated that a patch is on it's way.
Q: Is it safe to use Window Updates?
A: Yes, it is safe to use Windows Updates for now. My recommendation would be to set it to notify you of newly available updates, and you install them one by one. Before installing new updates, it is wise to check out the AntiWPA forum for feedback on those patches.
Q: So what do those cracks actually do?
A: They install an emulator that fools Vista into thinking you have a certain BIOS. Vista activates itself automatically.
Q: What is the easiest way of installing Vista?
A: There are a few simple steps you have to follow in order to install Vista correctly:
- It is recomended to have Vista on a DVD. Installation through virtual drives is buggy and fails occasionally. Any release should be fine with this method.
- Boot the PC with the Vista installation DVD. At some point, the setup program will ask you to insert a product key. Click "Next." Setup will now ask you if you want to insert a key at this point. Select "No." The setup program will ask you to choose the edition you have selected. Select any edition you want. The crack is compatible with all Vista editions.
- Fill all other information normally. Let the installation complete.
- When Vista first boots, download the crack and make a folder on the desktop called "Crack." Extract all the files of the crack to that folder.
- Click the Start Orb and type "Command Prompt." A command prompt link should appear. Right click on it, and select "Run As Administrator." UAC prompt should appear. Allow the operation.
- Head to the "Crack" folder on the desktop. You should check the readme file that should be included to see what EXE you should run there.
- Restart the computer. Vista should boot up normally. Every now and then, to make sure the crack is working, right click on "Computer" and select "Properties." It should say Vista is activated and genuine.
- Vista is now ready to use, fully updateable.
Q: How can I easily configure and tweak the Vista boot manager?
A: Starting with Vista, MS has changed the boot manager completely. The new manager is more robust and allows more control on the boot process. It is, however, much harder to configure and set up. There are 3rd party tools that make configuration much easier. Some of those are: VistaBootPro and EasyBCD.
Q: I've previously installed Vista with a different crack and now I understand my sin. Can I still use the recommended cracks without reinstalling Vista?
A: Yes and no. If your previous crack had an uninstall feature, use that first to remove it. If it doesn't, or can't find the previous crack, I think you're out of luck. You can try running them both concurrently, but this may raise issues. If that is the case, I'd recommend reinstalling Vista and starting all over again. As a rule, having two things do the same thing is almost always the worst case scenario.
Anyway, here are the things to do:
- Remove the previous crack using its uninstall feature and restart the PC to be sure it's really removed.
- When Vista loads crackless, download the crack and make a folder on the desktop called "Crack." Extract all the files of the AntiWPA crack to that folder.
- Restart the PC one last time.
This is the fail-safe method of going the right way with the correct crack. Some of the steps are not really necessary, but this is the best way to be sure it's working correctly.
[UPDATE #1]Finally updated the guide to use the recommended cracks. Sorry for the long delay.
Hope this FAQ will help you guys, and stop noobs from asking same questions all over. If you have ideas that could improve it (useful questions, grammar issues, etc), post them here (or PM me).

If you happen to have a Vista upgrade DVD you can now do a clean install in 7 steps.
1. Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and start the setup program.
2. When prompted to enter your product key, DO NOT enter it. Click "Next" and proceed with setup. This will install Windows Vista as a 30-day trial.
3. When prompted, select the edition of Vista which you have purchased and continue with setup.
4. Once setup has been completed and you have been brought to the desktop for the first time, run the install program from within Windows Vista.
5. This time, type in your product key when prompted.
6. When asked whether to perform an Upgrade or Custom (advanced) install, choose Custom (advanced) to perform a clean install of Vista. Yes, this means that you will have to install Vista for a second time.
7. Once setup has completed for the second time, you should be able to activate Windows Vista normally. You can also delete the Windows.old directory which contains information from the first Vista install.

I couldn't find the patch within 2mins of looking so I don't see a major issue, plus, does the patch include any copywritten content? If not, again, no issue in my eyes. Lets see what other mods think though.

Hm, if it's an issue, I'll remove the link. The crack doesn't modify anything of the system, it's like a trainer, lol. And you have to register to see links.

Thanks for the FAQ! And one quick question: Will this method work for an upgrade from XP to Vista? Or only a clean install?

Or only a clean install? | You should rather clean install Vista on another partition than upgrading your current XP installation to Vista. Firstly upgrading is too much random in its result, secondly you will certainly have some of your apps, games or hardware that will have trouble or won't run at all right now under Vista, thus keep your XP setup in dual-boot for such cases.

As a general rule, clean install is always preferable to upgrade, but yesm it should work.

Thanks for the faq. Maybe it would be helpful to remind people to disconnect from the internet during the process on the chance that the clock would be auto updated during the 2099 trick. And mention that x64 users have to let timerstop disable signed driver verification and reboot.

I can't update windows. I get a 80072f8f error which is:
CAUSE
This issue occurs if the date and time that are on the computer vary too greatly from the valid date and time. The valid date and time are on the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate that the Windows Update Web site uses. In this scenario, the Windows Update scan operation is unable to scan the computer for updates successfully.

Jenny, did you revert the clock back to 2007? This problem occurs when the date is 2052.
gtspm10000, this is a myth. The clock is updated within a few days after install. There should be plenty of time to install the crack during this few days.
Shaggybpc, updated the FAQ with the recommended Vista release.

It is *possible* for some to install using Daemon Tools, but the process is very buggy, as opposed to XP's install. Don't know why. At any rate, this has nothing to do with cracking Vista after install, so don't be afraid to try installing using DT.

when i installed vista beta RC2 it auto created some kinda boot manager and made my system dual boot.
after installing vista retail, i see no option to boot back into windows xp
i'm sure there is a way tho, can someone please help... i need access to xp just incase something happens to vista.
i am enjoying vista tho thanks to you guyz it's very complex i got some new things to learn.
had to set and tweak the system to my liking, alot of annoyances come enabled by default.
someone please elaborate on how to get access back to my windows xp heh.
i need to know it for peace of mind
but i could drop xp anyday for vista, i love it! as long as it continue to work

hey also,
can someone clarify the situation on windows updates.
i am not wanting to install them because i'm not sure if one of the updates will break the crack?
can we get a list with tested and proven windows updates that will not mess up the crack.

As of right now (12:30 PST, 3 Feb, 2007), nothing breaks it. Although the writer of timerstop says the x64 version (with updates) gives an error message about unsigned drivers when installing the crack (I had the same problem and he helped diagnose it during a new install). But the error message is actually untrue and everything still works.

cnZ, get the official AntiWPA crack. It's easy enough, and works with every edition.
