THQ Inc. today announced Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, the next standalone chapter in internal studio Relic Entertainment's award-winning Real-Time Strategy (RTS) franchise, is scheduled for release on Windows PC in spring 2008. Featuring an extensive interplanetary campaign spanning an entire star system in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm introduces two all-new factions for an unprecedented total of nine playable races. "Relic Entertainment has set the standard for technical excellence and innovation in the RTS genre," said Bob Aniello, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, THQ. "Dawn of War - Soulstorm continues that tradition as a standalone title featuring all-new, brutally addictive single and multiplayer game-play that will hook newcomers and skilled Dawn of War veterans alike."

"In Dawn of War - Soulstorm, we've taken Games Workshop's epic war from one planet to an entire star system," said Tarrnie Williams, general manager, Relic Entertainment. "Allowing gamers to play nine unique races, introducing air units and providing multiplayer achievements for the first time creates a tremendous amount of new and challenging strategic gameplay for all players."

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm is set in Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 universe - a dark, futuristic, fantasy setting where armies of technologically advanced warriors, fighting machines and hordes of implacable aliens wage constant war - and is played by millions worldwide. Executive produced and co-developed by Relic Entertainment in association with Iron Lore Entertainment, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm is a complete standalone title and will feature two all-new armies, including the malicious Dark Eldar, for an unprecedented total of nine playable races. In addition to new units across each of the seven existing races, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm will incorporate air units for the first time and introduce multiplayer medals, adding a whole new level of depth to online battles. The revolutionary meta-game introduced in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade is further expanded to an interplanetary scale in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, allowing players to battle across an entire star system.

They should take the CoH engine, put all the assets from all the expansions, add 3 new races, new campaign and call it Dawn of War 2. Gameplay is great and all, but the graphics are just outdated.

[To noobs with the "graphics is not everything" shit, duh, i just love this game, ans seeing as gameplay is already so good, good graphics will only make it much better experience. Those with the shit PCs, Rolling Eyes like I give a shit.]

It is an excellent game already no doubt! But to update this incredible game with the CoH engine would make it perfect! I agree.

I didn't recall the dark eldar having those beastie things, but it was late. however looking at it now, it doesn't really give me much hope for the tyranids looking like much.

Other 2nd new faction is supposed to be the Sisters of Battle. In other words: hot women in battle leather welding massive guns.. Oh man.. how could you NOT buy this 3rd installment now? Razz

Anyway.. SS has ALOT of new content going in regardless if the game engine is circa 2004. It still has ALOT to offer. We've been modding it since its beginning and its still very cool to work with. Not perfect but what ever is?

Don't get me wrong but this looks meh really really BAD its 2008 now NOT 2004 and milking down a game is just plain wrong . Do they target those who have a pc from 2000 or what ??!!

If some other RTS 3D title with so low rez textures came today computer press would stomp it to the ground with bad comments but looks like Dawn of War and WoW are the only ones that can getaway with it ....

This remembers me Tomb Raider 1 to 5 Laughing when the industry moved on this game still used its crappy engine from part 1 .

Speaking of WoW, I played Crysis and CoD4 and other new games maxed out and I still think WoW is a very very good looking game. Yes it doesn't have high poly count or DX10 "exclusive" effects but it runs well on vast amount of old and new computers and manages to look good as a whole.

Yeah, who cares? The fact is you get nine completely different races with the best strategy gameplay ever.

I agree, the engine isnt that old yet and it looks perfectly ok. Have a look at StarCraft and compare Wink There are still people buying that game im sure.

"best strategy gameplay ever" - It do have lots of different races and yes that makes it one of a kind just there, but the balance isnt allways the best, when you play online. But who can blame them, its almost imposible to balance 9 races.

Supreme commander would be so much more awesome if it didn't slow to a really smooth crawl with 4+ players in-game on a recent computer.

That's why playing old games like this is awesome, smooth as silk & faaaast! Sure you make sacrifices, but it's still fun.

just to mention for the interested that the witchhunters mod created for dark crusade is much more professionally done and its much more beautifull ,gorgeous and detailed compared to the officially announced soulstorm side

I strongly suggest to all of you (who like dow 40k) to play it, with the addition of daemonhunters + steel legion + combiner mod (the last let them all be played at once). Thus the playable sides are +3 Razz (well, there is also the tyranids mod, but somehow i like it less than the others)

witchhunters:

Speaking of mods, if you're tired of the stupidity of the original DoW/Dark Crusade AI, you must try this mod (if you haven't already):

Dawn of Skirmish AI mod:
http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=158736

It's a significant improvement over the original AI, it makes the skirmish games much more challenging, realistic, and FUN.
