I have this m4 128 gig ssd drive but on it'#s own it keeps losing free space?
Like now i have 24'MB' of free space left but i do not even install things on this drive no more because it is so small, i use my older hdd drive.
So why is it losing free space when i ain't putting nothing on it?
Weird anyone else have this?

Windows Restore points most likely.

I always turn that shit off right at the start, hogs up so much space..

I something like this once, not long after getting my SSD. It was something to do with AHCI not being set correctly in the BIOS and TRIM I think. Deleted files weren't being marked as deleted.

Also completely unrelated to the fact that it's an SSD, that happens on any drive for all of the above. And Windows Updates, application updates and about a billion other reasons.

i wouldn't suggest turning restore completly off, but set the size lower. I have it at 5 gb, which allows me to have several restore points, which served me well in case of a problem.

I've posted this before in another SSD thread on here.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds

Here is a really great and in-depth guide for SSD owners, saved me about 20GB of space. Now I know a lot of it is common sense, but there were a few tricks I was unaware of, especially about the hibernation and page files.

Check it out, might save you some space.

yes he probably has his C: drive filled to the brim with all kinds of temp files, cache files, installer files that installshield failed to remove and so on.

like Werelds said it has nothing to do with SSD, but everything to do with limited space. 128GB makes you more cautious that you are doing something wrong.

protip: without any games or huge apps, properly configured win7 64bit shouldn't take more than 20GB of free space.

Didn't see this one, but i can say with 99.9% that you have a virus.
Had the same on a client pc a ~7 years back, same shit happening as you described, turned out to be a virus that kept creating files.

If you have Java installed, go to Control Panel -> Java -> Offline Files (or something like that) and disable offline cache.

depends what he uses it for, it might cause problems.
not sure what he does on his PC, but if he does any VPN or java RDP, or such. But if you get weird issues on some java apps, turn it back on.

Start windows task manager, performance tab and start resource monitor. There you can select disk and see what is writing to your SSD.

I'd backup the important information and do a secure erase. That will completely restore the drive to it's original state by clearing charges in the MLC NAND's. The controller may be broken, TRIM and GC may not be working correctly etc...

Latest firmware: Release Date: 04/02/2013

Windows 7 Firmware updater: http://www.crucial.com/firmware/m4/070H/1.0.0.90_Crucial_070H.07.00_SSDFirmwareUpdate_Signed.zip

Windows 8 Firmware updater: http://www.crucial.com/firmware/m4/070H/1.0.0.41_Crucial_070H.07.00_WinSSDUpdater_SignedW8.zip

I don't know if they contain secure erase, but since it's a system disk you'll have to make a bootable USB stick or burn a CDR with the bootable version:
http://www.crucial.com/firmware/m4/070H/ISO_crucial-c400.070H.07.00.zip (ISO file)

Seems Crucial doesn't have proper Secure Erase support on their drives.. Confused

http://forums.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives-SSD-Knowledge/SSDs-and-Secure-Erase/ta-p/112580

Their solution (which is laughable):

Quote:
Follow these steps to delete partitions in Windows:

- Ensure the SSD is connected and is not the boot drive
- Right click Computer and select Manage
- Under Storage, select Disk Management. A list of the connected drives will appear
- In the lower right hand pane, find the drive you want to erase
- Right click on each partition and select Delete Volume.

Once you've followed these steps, you will need to let the drive sit idle for an extended period, ideally at least overnight. This will allow an in-built function called Garbage Collection to clean all the cells and effectively prepare the drive for re-use. Avoiding this step could result in poor performance when re-using the SSD.

WTF?!

Oh well, since we're talking about 1-2 write cycles out of 10-20 thousand you should use something like Hiren's Boot CD or similar and deep-format/write zeroes to every byte on the drive to clear any crap and replace bad blocks with the spare ones that every SSD has in reserve.

lol people advising drastic steps such as format or secure erase, we still have no idea why he has the problem because he provided no useful information whatsoever. it's probably not even related to the fact that he has ssd, just human error and lack of common sense.
