Any help for a beginner? I'm on the second mission, i get absolutely crushed (WotC, rookie).
I get the feeling that there's not a lot of strategy to this game at all, that it's mostly about having a ton of luck, am i wrong? There also seems to be no difference playing on normal or on rookie, all my characters die just the same
Taking cover is essential of course. I use overwatch if i have a character which for example is on high ground and in good cover. All in all this matters very little when there's a total of 10+ enemies who can take a beating just as good as my 4 characters + my characters gets mind controlled all the time.
Maybe i did something wrong from the start, are the 2 characters in the tutorial missions "supposed" to die, or can you play in a way where they survive?
Its always the worst at the start, since your guys are shit. Make liberal use of nades all the time (especially at the start) and always go for high cover.
As for the timers i always put it to 2x length in the second wave options, that makes it so you can still take your time a bit and not have to rush like crazy.
there are mods to increase the timers on the missions, they help alot.
It seems to be built into the game actually, in Advanced Options for Difficulty.
@xxax yes, i have a feeling this is one of the few games which are actually harder in the beginning.. a mix of both being shit at the game + having bad characters
I started again, without the stupid tutorial (it's of NO help at all, it basically helps you with things you would learn anyways in 30 seconds of just playing the damn game). The game starts differently and more easy if you don't play the annoying tutorial. without it you blow up some monument in the first mission and its easier overall to play the game.
@Vurt: if you don't like timed missions and RNG bullshit, why don't you try Phantom Doctrine. It's pretty much XCOM except this. It also has its flaws (weapon range ), but the fun outweighs the couple of negative aspects.
Well Gamescom is this week, and there's PAX West in about a fortnight or so. They could announce something in conjunction with those (more likely PAX). You'd think they'd want a decent media push, judging by WOTC. I'd guess it would have to come out by the end of the year. It's getting a bit long in the tooth now and another DLC is really pushing the boundaries of how much they can milk it. I would have thought they would have been working on X3 instead, although they could be doing so simultaneously I guess.

Yeah, i've looked into that, it seems like it eventually can become a great game. I think i'll wait a few more months
Looks like early October for the announcement of the new expansion. Scuttlebutt says Oct 9, anniversary of XCOM Enemy Unknown, is the likely date. In the meantime they will be doing weekly streams with various hints.
Not sure I wanna bother with playing through the game for the third time...
Yeah I was counting on Terror from the Deep now.

I meant that I was counting they would focus on Xcom 3.

Solomon has said he doesn't like TFTD much, so I'm not sure we'll get a full game of that for XCom 3. People were basically expecting what turned out to be WOTC to be some sort of mini-TFTD post-ending expansion, but seeing as we didn't get that and TLE doesn't look to be anything like that either, don't hold your breath.
New DLC is coming! Next Tuesday, October 9, 2018, we’re launching the XCOM 2: War of the Chosen – Tactical Legacy Pack DLC on Steam.
Tactical Legacy Pack is not only a celebration of XCOM, it’s a celebration of the fans who have supported us over the last six years. When asked what all of this means to Firaxis Games, Lead Producer Clint McCaul had this to say:
“It’s an honor to work besides so many talented and passionate developers to create something as special as XCOM 2: War of the Chosen - Tactical Legacy Pack, a content-rich DLC that not only celebrates the entire franchise but also says thank you to our fans. The halls of Firaxis were filled with excitement and steeped in nostalgia as we revisited and reimagined all the sights and sounds from the past decade of XCOM. I’m also super stoked for our fans to hear the all-new soundtrack inspired by the music from the original, XCOM: UFO Defense. It’s a perfect mix of creepy-meets-dark synthwave highlighted in Legacy Ops and breathes incredible new life into the campaign experience. I can’t wait for our fans to get their hands on this DLC!”
We’ll have more videos to come, going into greater detail on specific pieces of the Tactical Legacy Pack DLC, so be sure to subscribe to XCOM on YouTube and tap the bell to receive all notifications from the channel. In the meanwhile, here’s the full feature list:
NEW GAMEPLAY MODES:
Legacy Ops – Command a squad of soldiers through a series of linked consecutive tactical missions:
Central’s Archives – Central Officer Bradford, and other key members of XCOM, recount the pivotal operations that led to the rise of the resistance between the events of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2:
Blast from the Past – After the fall of XCOM HQ, Central Officer Bradford begins his journey to build the resistance by returning to where it all began.
It Came from the Sea – The broadcast of a fledgling radio DJ is reaching an audience he didn’t intend. It’s up to Central to save the DJ from an endless horde of hungry listeners.
Avenger Assemble – Join Lily Shen as she works to retrofit the Avenger into a new home for the growing forces of a reinvigorated XCOM.
The Lazarus Project – ADVENT is kidnapping key members of the resistance, and it’s up to Central to rescue some of XCOM's most renowned operatives.
Resistance Archives - Engage enemy forces in series of tactical missions increasing in difficulty
Skirmish Mode – Create and play your own custom XCOM tactical missions using the included editor that allows you to modify various settings (map, squad loadouts, objective, enemies, and more.)
NEW MAPS: Engage in battle across 28 new maps including remastered maps and scenes from XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM: Enemy Within. These new maps will be featured in Central’s Archives.
NEW WEAPONS AND ARMOR: Equip your soldiers with reimagined versions of the conventional, laser, and plasma weapons, as well as Kevlar, Carapace, and Titan armor from XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Complete Central’s Archives to unlock these new additions for use in the main single player campaign.
NEW CUSTOMIZATION AND PHOTOBOOTH OPTIONS: Customize your soldiers with new attitudes and helmets. Create new images in the Photobooth with additional backgrounds, colors, and character poses.
NEW SOUNDTRACK OPTIONS: With the new Soundtrack Selector you can choose to play the XCOM 2: War of the Chosen campaign with the existing score, the score from XCOM: Enemy Unknown, or an all-new soundtrack inspired by the music from the original X-COM: UFO Defense.
OFFLINE CHALLENGE MODE: Play through all 100+ War of the Chosen challenges as often as you want.
The Tactical Legacy Pack DLC requires ownership of both the base game XCOM 2, as well as the XCOM 2: War of the Chosen expansion. The DLC will be free on PC for all owners of XCOM 2: War of the Chosen until 12:59pm ET on December 3, 2018. After this point in time, the DLC will go on sale for $7.99. The Tactical Legacy Pack will also be added to the XCOM 2 Collection, though this will have no effect on the price of the XCOM 2 Collection.
Sounds kind of lame to be honest. And effectively a 3 month demo? Not sure why anyone would buy it after that point.
I'm not sure what you're talking about. The DLC will be permanently added to your account for free if you own XCOM 2+War of the Chosen before 3rd December.
The way Jake says it in the video sounded like you don't get to keep it for free, which would indeed be weird, but this is 2K. I'm sure they'll clarify it in the stream due out today.
Edit: Ah, a 2K employee confirmed you get to keep it on Reddit:

This DLC will be free to download for all owners of XCOM 2: War of the Chosen on PC on Steam until 12:59pm ET on December 3, 2018. If you get it before then, you own it forever; after that it goes on sale. We have an FAQ that should answer all your questions: https://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/articles/360009702974
Edit 2: Some further info from Kevin Schultz (Firaxis marketing manager, the Asian guy in the stream 2 weeks ago) on Reddit:
Quote:
I don't think the video makes it super clear, those 4 stories are composed of 7 missions each so it will take you some time to get through them. Each mission is peppered with character building VO/lore/narrative.
There are new photobooth options, helmets, soldier attitudes as well. The parcels we created for the new maps get fed into the campaign's procedural map generation as well. This should add some additional variety to your next playthrough
Edit 3: And further interesting info from the 2K guy:

The XCOM 2: War of the Chosen – Tactical Legacy Pack was developed exclusively for Windows PC with Mac and Linux versions coming via Feral Interactive. There are currently no plans to bring it to other platforms.
I guess sales and bugs/performance issues on consoles probably didn't make it worth their while. As someone in that Reddit thread pointed out, this was likely primarily something to keep the art department busy while the programmers did the initial groundwork on XCOM 3.
I still need War of the Chosen but it has not dropped below $10 yet so I will just have to wait. I do not even thing it has been under $20 that I can remember.
There was a very brief window of an hour or two when it was $10 on Amazon, but other than that the low is around $21.50. You can currently get it for around $25. I would expect no further discounts until well into next year now.

Too bad I missed out on that $10 price then as I have far too many games in my backlog to really want to spend more then $10-15 on any game nowadays as that is usually the 75% range on most titles.
Well I broke down as there was a deal for the full collection for $23.75 at WinGameStore (I posted the info in the deals topic). Even though it was a double dip on the base game for me in the long run it wasn't as bad since I got the base game as part of a Humble Monthly last year and War of the Chosen plus all the DLC would have equaled more then I paid anyways plus now I am set for this free DLC.
