As of August 7th, Arkane employee Sébastien Mitton’s (imperfectly) translated statement on the matter is this:
“Now we are part of Bethesda, this was our project before we signed with Bethestda. Everyone wants it to be released, a demo to be made, that we give that to the community. I see that everyday. For now we don't know. If the demand is so high, something may happen, but yeah, we made it, I brought us a lot of things, of course we want something to happen, but it's on the old source engine, so a lot of things have to happen.”
This petition is meant to communicate to Valve, Bethesda, and any other parties who are potentially holding the release back that the demand, indeed, is very high. Half-Life fans, modders, and archivists alike would be delighted to have a build of the game to play, study, and perhaps breathe new life into. Even a cut-down or scrubbed edition of the game as it stands right now would be better than nothing!

u want every gamedev start looking through their trash of canned projects and ask us to hype and possibly fund it ? just cause it has half-life in it doesnt mean it will still be good in 2020 especialy when people have alyx expectations of gfx im guessing
and im to lazy to replay all of halflife 2 to get all the insider jokes that would be in such a game
it was a miracle of "epic" proportions now thinking about it that opposing force was as good at it was with gearbox behind it, such a miracle only happens once a lifetime

but why couldnt they be arsed to make a 60 second video with footage of their own for it in that petition statement a teaser video would have gottem them 100k upvotes and 250k signatures in no time

at this point i personally dont care about half life anymore.
What could it even offer other games dont?
Game from a washed out gaming dev that prolly cant keep up with today's AAA standards...
Only thing a sequel would give us is story closure(which at least i care alot less nowadays) and gameplay dissapointment.
