depends on what your definition of soon is.
it's been in development for like half a year now and there's still probably a couple of months to go.

Didn't they make an announcement though recently, about an update coming soon because they hadn't actually had one in a long while?
Maybe I dreamed it

You guys have no love for good games....

We are very grateful to those that made it possible by supporting us financially all this time. Dwarf Fortress has become more than a game in the twelve years since we started. It is now a crazy art project that everyone can engage in! Whether it's creating the awesome mods, or helping newbies learn to play, everybody helps out. There are going to be a lot of bugs in the beginning so one major way to help out would be to contribute to the bug tracker. Dwarf Fortress would never have made it this far without such a strong community. Thanks to everyone on the Bay 12 forums and beyond for spreading the word. It's going to be a busy few months coming up so thank you again in advance for your patience and generosity!

Hmm.. a year ago I would have been excited.. now.. I dunno. I may have simply moved on at this point. Some things you can only drag on so long.

Oh boy im never tired of DF, i launch it occasionally, make a fort, play some days, fail and i take a rest.

Its just that no game makes me feel that nice feeling of progress and randomness with depth.

Cant wait to see the adventure mode expanded, ive never played adventure mode. So im looking forward to it.

0.40.01 is out. Seem to be a primarily bug-hunt version with a few new features acting up or not implemented fully yet. Please brew a few ales for me, while I'm still saving for a rig. Smile

Anyway, I'm playing a new game, and my fortress' visibly too conservative, so it's invaded by "A VILE FORCE OF DARKNESS".
 Spoiler:

Soon Toady will anounce the new installement, "ARTIFACTS".
Rejoice! Very Happy

SPECIAL:
I'm using a super awesome tileset, check it out!

How do the artifacts influence the fortress mode?
From what I read, they seem to be made more for the next big update (magic & something update).

I'm thinking of sending my dwarves into abyss once again. Been a very long time since I tried it last.

Last time I played they raise the fort value (like all items you create) and will make traders bring more valuable goods and make immigrant waves bigger. They also raise room decoration significantly, put an artifact table into a dining hall and it will almost certainly become legendary.

The repo from Hubu has at least an experimental version of the AIO pack.

Obviously the white bearded guy is a forgotten beast and the naked people on the back are dwarves being hunted by the beast.

As the spam pictures have been now cleaned away the joke makes no sense;
The picture was of the.. serbian? war criminal who killed himself in the court by drinking poison.

Don't dispair! With a nice tileset and the wiki, you can achieve Asperger levels in no time Smile

Since there is a new version, they have to update the tilesets, DFHack, etc...
Give it a bit of time Wink
But yeah, that tileset is dope

So how pissed off with the UI were you when you started playing and how long did it take to play the game comfortably?

I just can't get over the UI.

The UI got me lost AF at first. But I discovered this game in like 2005-6, and it still was "2D" DF, so there were no Z-level layers, and the game was a little bit less complex, so I guess I got used to it more quickly than a newb would today.
It's barebone, but it's quite clear IMO. Once you know the basics, you just fly through them no problem.
The one thing that really bothered me (and still does), it the change of keys for some menu navigation: sometimes it's the arrows+pgdwn+pgup, sometimes it's the numpad.

I'm also kind of self-taught, since there was no real wiki "back in the day", while now, there is a wealth of tutorials, both in writing and in video format.

The main thing that bugged me was the ASCII that I found just wayyy too dry, but the tilesets that are now available make it look like some kind of (s)NES game, which is a game-changer Smile

Hope I answered your question Embarassed

Yes you did, thanks! I can imagine that you had a gentler entry to the game.
I'm not sure tutorials would necessarily help me too much. I'd get a better idea of what to do and how to do it. At the same time I'd also see more stuff to remember in a short span, making me more aware of this UI.

The tile sets indeed make it look pretty cool. I have little problem with that.

Well, you WILL fail, miserably and a lot Very Happy
At first, of course. I would recommend just focusing on one aspect at a time, without really caring about even the medium-term needs.
Just embark on a site, and try to make sense of what you see, use the diffent tools of the UI to, like, select a tile and see what's on it, select a dwarf and see the different options, discover the menus, etc...
You'll be there for a little while and you'll learn a lot, without even unpausing the game! Razz

Then try to dig around, build things, etc...

When you survive your first winter without too much trouble, you'll already have grasped the core mechanics, and from there, it's just next layer upon next layer.
I don't have a mic ATM, but if you want, we can go discord or something, and I'll be able to give you a little rundown, and answer your questions immidiately, and that will get you a long way I think Smile

The game's worth it, it truely is an incredibly well made and fun adventure, even if at first the dorf does you raw ( ͡- ͜ʖ ͡-)

As long as my motivation survives Very Happy

@ HubU
That is very nice of you. Maybe I'll take you up on that offer just to get the ball rolling, to decide which version of the game to get, a tile set (e.g. meph) and perhaps mods to get if any.

I just worry with this game and its UI, that I fail to grasp the actual nature of a problem, which would then only lead to frustration.
But I'm starting to feel like I should just force myself for a while to play this game.
