HDR is still a fucking mess "standard" wise, OLED is only good choice at the moment because it doest have backlight.

There is no mess for HDR. The various formats are quite well defined, and most proper TVs support all standards. A proper TV knows its peak brightness, and so can tone map the content to appear best on the screen.

The mess is in PC world, where retarded manufacturers want even 400 nits LCDs to be called "HDR".

We have a Polaroid 65" 4k for 500CHF instead of 900CHF or something around that.

Sure, it's not the same quality as a 2k+€ tv, but hey, the tv we had before was like an 80cm one ^^ So it's like 4x the surface lol.

Just be aware, that often less expensive means, for example, no smart tv, so you need a 3rd party solution, like apple tv or android etc. and also the sound in the tv might be shit.

We use a rather cheap solution for that, by having a Logitech 2.1 speaker+sub, hooked onto it Smile

alright TV is here finally got around to really mess around with it. ill spare you with the "fuck me those colors" etc etc praise

On the contrary. what really gets on me tits is that even in this day and age connecting a TV as monitor is still a fucking headache. Oh it works all right, but the picture isn't even close to what it is supposed to be in terms of color accuracy, contrasts, blacks, etc I know this has been a problem since like-- forever to have TVs play nice with graphics cards but i figured since the LG had gotten so much praise for its gaming capabilities that the situation would have improved on such a "state-of-the-art" tv

for instance i get really terrible color banding via TV Out HDMI (especially in dark scenes), no matter if i have HDR enabled or disabled. and for the life of me i cannot replicate the same picture quality via tv-out that e.g. LG's own youtube app delivers (took some HDR/Non-HDR 4k test videos from youtube as a reference to compare). and worst of all, while LG does have a special "PC-Setting" (to accomodate RGB/4:4:4 chroma i suppose) this is really the worst preset in terms of picture quality.

i have gotten somewhat closer to the original (i.e. LG's youtube app) by messing around with these settings:

PC
Nvidia control panel:
4k / 60hz / RGB full (anything else degrades picture quality)
Windows display properties:
HDR enabled

LG C9 OLED TV:
DeepTrueColour (or whatever they call it) enabled
HDMI set to "console" (this one's important)
finetuning via several menu options (ask if anybody cares for details)

however i am still not 100% satisfied with the picture (especially the color banding persists albeit not as bad as before). so if you guys have any suggestions ill much appreciate it. researching various websites/forums just causes more headache -- many ppl seem to be experiencing the problem but the suggested "solutions" are not only contradictory most of the time but also ultimately unrewarding

If you are not satisfied with the picture, send back the product.
I would rather send it back and stuck with nothing then have it and have this "itching" constantly on my mind when I use it.

Most of these days this is the way I prefer the products I buy, Out of the box im not satisfied, I send it back.
I dont want/have the time to fiddle around with the shit.

that's not it, the picture is great if i use any other source than the PC Sad

& there is no such thing as gaming mode on the LG only instant response mode (which has no effect on picture quality) and the gaming preset mode for panel settings (brightness, contrasts, etc) which btw is nowhere near optimal either. it is the way the TV interpretes the HDMI signal that is at fault here is what i suspect ...

however input lag and all that jazz that used to be a real bummer on my old Samsung is completely gone as far as my lazy old eyes can tell

Did you test other external sources? Console or blu-ray player for example.

Not sure if I should ask you to look at test images, but do you see banding in either of these images?

Are you using the ISF Expert (Dark Room) image mode?

Afaik newer LGs apply some debanding if you enable noise reduction. Maybe you want to test that.

@pho08 Why do you set the HDMI port to "console"? As per rtings.com it should be labeled as "PC". And only after changing the label you should start playing with the color settings etc. as everything gets overwritten with the label change. Maybe try the suggested config on rtings.com:

I have the 65B9 and it should have the exact same options. There is game mode and it disables most post processing and gives a very clear picture.

You cannot fix color banding if its in the source, a.k.a video what you are playing that has bad compression.

You can, to a degree. Newer LGs, I think, appliy some debanding when noise reduction is activated. madVR has debanding functionality and so do other software means on pc. They will all remove some wanted image information, as it isn't always possible to differentiate between banding and some desired image detail.

Man, I'm having really bad viewings with latest rips, color banding everywhere even when I download the 8GB+ rips out there. Only difference is if I get a BDremux around 25-30GB, now THAT gets smooth gradients Very Happy but it didn't happened before, not as usual as nowadays for sure.

I only download remuxes these days, for those reasons. And high quality audio.

Only films with shitty 1080p blurays, I allow myself downloading a high bitrate 720p, because the bluray didn't have more detail anyway.

Now that's a good thing to consider, moreso if you take into account the distance between sofa and telly

Still, with HDR and h265 tools still not being high quality enough, the quality drop is noticeable. And even from a distance, as you said—color banding—is still very visible. Banding, from my experience, gets worse when they encode HDR content badly. So I just download the remuxes. It takes a few more minutes, but I never find myself in a craving mood, not having time to wait. Very Happy

With 1080p/720p encodes, things are different. x264 is very mature, so any high bitrate encode is almost guaranteed to be of good quality.

I use this thread instead of the monitor thread.

Thinking of buying the samsung q70r 55" just asking here first so there are no better TV I can get for the same price, right now this TV is on sale for 900$

Any similar or better non burn in / oled TV i can get for this price. This is for my 3by3m apartment. No light from window as I live on the first floor so window is always covered.

This is to be used for platformers with a controller and as a daily monitor for fps and other mouse and keyboard games. And movies and TV shows as well.

If the LG 65CX costs 250 euros more compared to the 65C9, would the newer model be the obvious choice? I don't really see much of a difference between the C9 and the CX. Or should I just go with the C9 and accept WebOS 4.xx?

while taking a quick look I also couldn't find much of a difference

conclusion by flatpanelshd also compares them, but doesn't find much

Unfortunately I have stopped keeping myself up to date on TVs and the best source I have is a forum, and forums are not suitable for quickly skimming through to get up to date...
