I was considering reading A tale of the malazan book of the fallen while waiting for a dance with dragons, is it as good as a song of ice and fire series?

Yes. yes it is. It is a very good series. I find the first book abit hard to get into, but after abit it all just keeps going well. Its an epic novel like A song of ice and fire. Trust me, I dont think you will be disappointed.
