If you're getting a DVD, check out if the 720p HD rip is not also the same size. Some releases are 4.7GB at size and much more worth than a DVDR.

for now I only have a standalone that can play DVD/xvid ... once I have the HTPC hooked up I imagine I will d/l a lot of HD rips...

but shit, I can get a 12 ft. DVI--HDMI cable, meaning I can keep my computer as is on my desk -- except it is 14 ft away from my TV Crying or Very sad

I honestly cannot percieve a noticable difference in quality between a dvd and a hd-dvd. Could be due to my eyes, shitty equipment or idgaf.

poor quality equipment, there is a noticable difference.

Yup, or incorrectly configured equipment, or your TV is to small compared to your viewing distance. On all my setups, HD-DVD looks amazing, and destroys upconverted DVD. Even on my projector which is only 720p native, i notice a huge difference.

Get better equipment, get your eyes checked, or get your TV ISF calibrated.

And i agree with Deelix, blu-ray is over rated, because is DRM filled, overbloated expensive format. HD-DVD is the true replacement for DVD. Blu-ray is another failed attempt by Sony to control movie distribution.

And remember HD-DVDs are all region free, unlike Beta-ray.

@OP

You think 4.5 gigs is a huge DL, i DL .mkv files in excess of 15Gigs regularly. Gotta get those blu-ray exclusive some how.. LOL

People are just too whiny about these things nowdays.
I can still watch and enjoy movies on my VCR. I have no problems watching an divx movie on my hd tv. It's the same sorts of people as the graphics whores that's just out for the nice graphics and don't care about the gameplay.

And NO fucking movie in the world is so good that I want to use up to 20gb or so for one single movie in good HD. I've got far fucking better uses for that space.

my conclusions:

dvdr's are worthless... a 2cd xvid dvdrip is going to look as good as a 4.5 gig dvdr... the only reason to download dvdr's is for people still using dvdplayers hooked up to their tvs for movie watching.

1080p is silly. 720p is the perfect compromise for high quality and reasonable filesize to quality ratio... i really dont want to commit 15-20 gb for ONE fucking movie, no matter how high quality it is, and most 1080p movies at lower sizes are going to completely negate the quality you should be seeing at that size.

so yeah... 720p releases for good action/visual movies are worthwhile... there is a HUGE difference between hd and normal definition movies, anyone claiming they see none are either looking at poor examples of hd, or need some new eyes and some decent hardware.

xvid encoded movies are still relivant no matter what people say... im sick of people saying that in this day and age, 'shitty' xvid rips are worthless because internet is so cheap and fast and lots of bandwidth and rah rah rah... bullshit, xvid gives good quality at great filesizes... true, i would like to see x264 become the new standard to replace xvid, but until that happens, xvid dvdrips still kick ass.

summary:

720p for great movies, xvid for ok movies

dvdr = pointless
1080p rips = pointless - if i love a movie THAT much, and want THAT level of pure quality, ill buy the bluray or hddvd release.

the source doesn't even need to be that great to look a lot better in HD. Here are a couple shots from Day of the Dead which is over 20 years old. I resized the regular xvid to match the x264 720p, which is what the TV would do anyways .... this HD rip is only the size of a regular DVD as well...

 Spoiler:

difference is quite apparent Wink

1080p rips are around 8gb. There are even 4,7gb 1080p rips and they look awesome.

im sure on a crt screen @ 1280x960 those 8gb 1080's must look pretty damn nice, but i stand by my statement...

for example, the transformers rips... i compared the 720 @ 8gb to the 1080 @ 12gb i think it was, and the 12gb one failed every time except for when the scenes had zero motion in it

the only 1080's that'll look good at 8gb (or even 10, for that matter), are the ones that have the 2.375 ar, and are under 90 minutes and are not action-heavy... and i cant see the point of a hd release if it isnt full of exciting visuals and action.

im sure if you arent very fussy about visual quality, and dont look too close, those 8 and 5 gb 1080's will look really nice... but if your not fussy about quality... why are you watching hd in the first place when standard xvid will suffice?

There are rips and there are rips. Are you talking about scene rips and releases? Because i wasnt talking about that shit. Thats is POS. Im talking about rips from people that care about quality. Inhouse encodes that are 1080p and 8gb look awesome. When i was talking about dvd 5 1080p i was talking about animation movies. Wtf you talking about what CRT?

It doesn't matter if a movie has action or is slow, if it's long or short, what matters most is compressibility. Some movies contain a lot of action, yet are compressible much better than other, slow moving movies.
