Yeah until the DRM kicks in.

Now I know it has not caused much problems yet (supposedly only when playing HD media), but it is still very very evil of microsoft. Also, I listened to a roundtable on windows 7 with microsoft etc. and it was apparant that their main focus is how windows 7 will be received by the large PC manufacturers - everything is tailored to their needs WHICH MAKES ME FUCKING SICK...

BTW: I stole a vista key at work. The machine had the sticker on it, but the IT dept. has XP deployed. I AM GOING TO BURN THAT KEY!

Guise, I was semi-joking about actually burning it, but I can't understand how people are happy with the fact that theres hidden mechanisms in vista (I would try it if there wasn't). I don't know a lot about vista (the drm issue made me look away), but has the drm even been cracked?

What DRM is that? The one that sands data to the FBI? Or the one that asks MS if you can play the video file whenever you try to play your favorite porn video? Razz

You've probably read an article that has blown something out of proportions, like most that haven't actually tried Vista but have read about something misleading, and put your head in the sand.

You are probably right, it was the Peter Guttmann article mostly. It painted a pretty grim picture. But basically Vista is supposedly wasting A LOT of resources by monitoring itself under certain circumstances. Peter Guttmann article:

http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html

Also, this article looks at guttmans article:

http://www.miraesoft.com/karel/2006/12/25/cost-analysis-of-windows-vista-content-protection/

A few snips from around the net:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Windows_Vista (esp the Digital Rights Management section)

Steve Gibson of Gibson Research Corporation has stated during his Security Now! show that he agrees with Peter Gutmann in principle and that what he proposes is a factually accurate description of what is found in the specification from Microsoft.

The Free Software Foundation is conducting a campaign called "BadVista" against Vista on these grounds.

Apple Inc, Microsoft's major competitor, frequently made Vista a target of its "Get a Mac" advertising campaign. (Well of course they would...)[/url]

Edit: links to Peter Guttman on Steve Gibson's radio show, and vista drm:

wel vista is a baby OS. Asking all the time if you are sure etc.

But once you have fintuned it for your needs, you have to admit it is easy. You have to do nothing and it keeps going. No crashes so far, no frozen screen. Just plug and play.

The only shitty thing is that the auto update once screwed up my boot loader and totally fried my dual boot system. But in the end, the vista recovery cd fixed most of the problems. The CentOS was gone forever, the windows even repartitioned the 'usb stick' *cough cough* as a FAT32 drive. That 'usb stick' was my linux partition. But besides that i had no problems so far.

gotta love the idiot that takes so much time to write an article but can be arsed to actually try it himself.

Gutmann allegedly did no experimental work with Vista to prove his theories. Rather, he makes mistaken assumptions and then speculates wildly on their implications.

Interesting read @ winsupersite about proprietary vs free/open software: http://www.winsupersite.com/alt/keith_curtis_02.asp

I don't agree with the guys analogues though:

Quote:
The next line in the book is that the problem with alchemy is that everyone had to learn for themselves that drinking mercury is a bad idea. Progress in math and science happens when scientists have "shoulders to stand on."

He compares software with math and science to build his "slogan", something I don't agree with. Using his analogy I'd say that the alembics, boilers and all other stuff an alchemist had in his laboratory weren't just given to him and every other alchemist in the world, they had to buy their tools to perform their alchemy. Mathematicians and scientists usually use computers, calculators, chalk(!) etc. that have been paid for by themselves, their university, their employer etc.

The deal with free/open software is more complex than that and it's kind of regrettable that people like him keep using flawed slogans and logic like that. It only helps confuse the subject even more.

for me the only difference between xp and vista is the changes to the audio hal. otherwise performance wise they are the same for me (to within a percent or so). Win7 seems no quicker than either for me but server2k8 seems to be faster during use (for my setup vista & xp = 32bit. win7 & server2k8 = 64bit).
XP = pro audio, Vista = gaming & day2day, server2k8 = experimenting, Win7 = everyday & gaming once final is released

pro audio? If you're talking about ASIO capabilities I can tell you that ASIO is 100% supported in Vista and Win7. I'm using ASIO 2.0 on my X-Fi Platinum with Reaper (amazing sequencer for an amazing price).

http://www.reaper.fm/

no i mean vista removing hardware acceleration from audio. I have asio 2 drivers for my cards in all my o/s' but that doesnt give you all the dsp's features. the difference in cpu load is significant, under xp most audio processing can be offloaded to the card, running emu cards on xp have nearly zero cpu load for all processing/mixing/effects, under vista / win7 /server2k8 i get a hefty cpu hit when running lots of fx/ routing/channels.
have tried reaper but not really same league as sonar 8/cubase 4/nuendo 3 etc. Still have most of my commonly used audio apps installed on vista for messing around, but always go back to xp for serious work. (btw your xfi & my emu cards are pretty much the same card under the skin, what makes the emu cards entry level pro rather than high end home is just the pre-amps and component quality and drivers/software)
