I'm having 1,1 GB used in my 64bit Win7 on idle. Either way it's considerably higher than the 32bit screenshot you posted.

sim apps maybe but the 2nd rendition there is already settling down its cycles where as the first run on x64 is showing its still high app cycling as if its just opened. the other well its already past that due to the spike u see and has reduced and settled after initial run
do a fairer comparison plx....

you dont see the cpu usage is different in those pics?
one is showing a shot of the cpu just gone into activity so peaks at top like when it starts an app or something, the bottom screenshot shows that initial peak passed already in the timeline meaning the os and app has had time to settle down showing a discrepency now between itself and the one thats only just started up..
simple really.

that was when i was making screens
what cpu usage has anything to do with ram usage, those were just spikes

Your less likely to get a virus with 64.

It's true that many trojans screw up on x64. Bad testing, tsk tsk tsk.

They screw up because they try to infect other processes; a 32-bit process (your trojan) can only see other 32-bit processes in Win7, therefor a lot less processes can be infected. Here's the kicker though: file access is fine, so anything that wants to fuck with your filesystem can still do so fine on x64.
The memory claim about x64 is bollocks though. It doesn't double in memory usage because it's running x64, it doubles because there's more RAM available. Win7 aims to use about a third of the available memory to load services/drivers and cache whatever it finds worth caching. I'm sure some x64 drivers will consume marginally more memory than their x86 counterpart, but that's not where the memory usage comes from.

bollox or not same setup with 4gb ram, it will still use almost twice as less ram on x86 OS
tested myself several times

*sigh* <insert massive wall of facepalm here>
I'm going to say this once and then walk away; FREE RAM IS WASTED RAM. Period. Google for SUPERFETCH and have an enlightening read =) Hell, the following article is from 2006 and - I believe - it excellently explains WHY Vista (and now, subsequently, Windows 7) "used" so much memory.
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2006/09/why-does-vista-use-all-my-memory.html
It's a great feature and it works spectacularly. So much so that I'm stunned it took MS so long to implement it.

CORSAIR CM2X2048-6400C5 2GB DDR2-800 XMS2 CL5
that should do me fine, right? grab 2 of those for 4gb?
ok and final FINAL question:
at the moment i have:
Corsair TWIN2X2048-8500C5D XMS2 which gives me 2gb...
now the final final question is can i lump those together for 6gb total, or does it matter that one is 8500 and one is 6400?
like i said, i know fuck all about ram, really... |
Yes, yes and no it won't matter.
If you put the new RAM in with the old, the old RAM will run at the lower clock speed of 800mhz. I seriously doubt you will get compatibility issues with that combination and all the RAM will still run in dual channel. You will probably have to up the volts a little but apart from that everything should be fine.

Regular users shouldn't even think about RAM and shit. Unlees you want that nanosecond advantage, it doesn't make a difference. Just get a good set (dual-channel is a must) and use it. Unless you do some crazy shit, it'll work fine.
