As JB said, no sense in getting a new 6950 in hope you can flash it to a 6970. You should go for a 2GB 6950 if you plan on playing with AA. But if you want AA at 1080p or even more, you should probably consider an even faster card.

My bottleneck is clearly the CPU Sad

Locked BIOS in what way JB?

I don't know it all that well but it's a problem I had with my previous GPU just before I upgraded my entire PC system.
(I'm probably wrong on a number of things, still have more to learn but that's probably always going to be the case, ha ha.)

ASUS EAH6950 DCII/2DI4S/1GD5 is the card I settled on. From what I can see, I can probably unlock the shaders, but not flash to a 6970.

Still, the 6950 is still better than the 5870.

And I actually managed to sell my damaged 5870. For £80! Course, if I knew I was going to get that for it... then I would have had almost double my budget for a card Sad Oh well, I can buy a new case or something Laughing

Not really.

Ran mine for a year and half at 80% fan speed levels, and it never went much over 78c full tilt. That was with the reference cooler and overclocked to 777mhz. +177mhz to reference. The 470 overclocked to basically 770mhz runs on par with a 480 and really not any hotter.

And I ran my 5870 for a year at 975 MHz (+125) without ever having to push it past 50% fan speed Smile

Same thing stands for the 470 as for the 480: unless you get it really, REALLY dirt cheap, it's just not a good buy, not with all the alternative options. One of which would once again be a 560 Ti - far superior to the 470 in every aspect other than performance, where it perfectly matches it.

No, you are wrong.

Everyone must own a GTX 470 at some point.

Congrats Kaltern! I'm sure you'll be pleased with the decision Smile You could put that bonus £80 towards an SSD and really make your machine fly However, just so you know; the 1GB 6950 can't be flashed to 6970... you should still be able to perform the shader unlock though. Once again, Paul is the guy to help on this since he's done just that Very Happy

As wizard says, only works for 2GB models - and first-generation ones at that Smile

Still, you should be able to overclock it quite well, mine did 6970 clocks (880/1375) without even a voltage bump, 900+ on the core should be doable at least, and if you're a bit lucky you'll get that memory much higher as well Smile

Same as for any GPU, most throttle down between 90-110. Stick to 75-80 as your maximum and your card will be fine.

I'm not too bothered about the whole 6790 thing... at the end of the day, I'll be able to play stuff a little bit faster than I could before... and that's probably all that matters Very Happy

I bought a case as my one is well, generic tripe Laughing http://www.amazon.co.uk/Inwin-Griffin-Tower-Computer-Gaming/dp/B0064Z1UHM/ref=pd_cp_computers_2 in case anyone cares Razz

I like huge fans Laughing only £25 too, I didn't get it from Amazon.

Still can't believe I sold my knackered card for 80 quid Laughing

Tell that to my 570, the sodding thing has TERRIBLE thermal performance. The fan cycles all the way up to 80%++ since the card routinely pegs 85°C in intensive games. Yeah yeah, I know the 570 is perfect for everybody else and it runs at 5°C when under 100% load... it's just me, as always Razz

I don't have any operating knowledge about SSDs, so I couldn't help you there... but I will say this; just like PSUs, you get what you pay for. That one costs £33 for 60GB?? That's extremely cheap, so I'd be wary about it - those reviews may be accurate.

SO I got the 6590, it is shader locked sadly, but no matter.

My main concern is it is running at 90oC while playing Skyrim at 1920x1080.. the fan is pretty much maxed out.

Any cause for concern? The new case isn't here yet (should be later today) so the old casew is pretty cramped and no real airflow.. I took the side off but it isn't improving anything. For comparison, my 5780 didn't break a sweat, barely touched the 80oC mark.

It might be because my card is jammed into the case and isn't 100% straight Laughing

The heatsink may not be quite as effective as it should be....

Bloody new case STILL isn't here.. FEdEx as efficient as always lol

60GB will be just enough for the OS and a couple of games. Should have opted for a 120GB drive though as that gives you more then enough room for 8-10 average sized games + the OS.

I think (hope!) he's counting the £80 he got from selling his old 5870. £200 is about right for a 6950. Of course, if he DID get a 6950 straight up for £120... I'm going to be pissing with envy Sad

Laughing Don't panic guys, it was used Razz

And I could only just about afford a 60Gb. It's enough to load Windows, essential apps, swap file and a game or two, the rest of my vast game collection will just have to reside on my HDD's...

I'm fucking cursed, my mobo just shorted out somehow.... Lovely burning PCB smell, and exposed copper on the board which has ruptured.

Delicious.

Maybe I can get it RMAd but I can imagine it being blamed on me for some reason. It's only 3 weeks old too.

Fuck. And my case came this morning too.

I hate my life, seriously. I blame world peace.
