That without the wormhole, the transcendent future humans do not exist.
And if they don't exist, then the wormhole can't exist, since they (according the what's heavily implied in the movie) created said wormhole.
And if the wormhole doesn't exist, then Cooper doesn't send the gravity solution to humanity and humanity dies.
There is only one way humanity survives and that is for the wormhole to be created but it's a paradox. They can't just create themselves out of nothing, there has to be an origin... But there can't be an origin without the wormhole since that would imply humanity survived without it and coopers journey, which would make the whole thing pointless and mean that the wormhole was pointless.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie for a lot of reasons but this thing right here annoyed me the moment I saw it in the cinema the first time. It's so obvious. Some people, when I've confronted them with this claim it's alright because they're transcendent humans, they work on higher dimensions and bla bla bla bla. Those are just extremely lazy excuses for having no explanation to absolve this paradox.
The only explanation that makes sense is that the wormhole was not created by future humans, but by some other third party whos existence is not reliant on the survival of humanity itself. But it's heavily implied from Coopers speech inside the black hole "facility" that it is indeed done by future humans.
Spoiler:
I thought the very same thing. A friend who happens to be a big fan of this movie suggested that it may be created by humans from another dimension who somehow weren't affected or survived the earth.
Either way that theory is
Spoiler:
The more you think about it, the less sense it makes that they are future humans. That idea alone creates additional paradoxes.
I can't understand why they included that line in the movie. Yes, it's just Cooper stating his opinion, and this doesn't make it a fact, but its almost being shown as a 'big twist' in the end, which makes it for the viewer hard to ignore.
It just complicated everything more.
It makes a lot more sense when you consider 'them' as friendly 5th dimensional aliens who wanted to help save humanity (for whatever their motives were).
well it's a loop
but it sort of makes sense
like they didn't need cooper in the first place as stated so their initial mission was a success in the future. they would follow the heart of the girl and find a planet they could populate. and create a human race all together. Now, obviously things went bad on that mission and they all recalled this dashing pilot they once had that could successfully complete the mission. they told tales of this would be pilot that died on earth and if it were for him, they speculated, they would have a lot more people. Cooper was the man who would make plan A a possibility. So eons go by and mankind evolved so much that they were able to enter the fifth dimension. An obnoxious young evolved human thought he could alter the timeline. He created the wormhole and through it tried to communicate with cooper. Did so successfully as they've all known what could travel through time. He gave him coordinates. Cooper went into space. Mission still went poop, but knowing that robot ai person wasn't enough to complete for plan a, cooper went with it. and the young obnoxious young evolved human spent so many years watching that room made it so simple to figure out that cooper was able to communicate vital information, allowing plan A to succeed with all the bright minds and necessary people to move the human race forward.
Time line has been altered, but it wasn't a loop. It was meant to look like a loop but it was all designed for mathew to figure out how to complete the mission.
That's if you look at it to make sense.
otherwise, he went back in time to send himself into space to send himself back in time to send himself into space to go back in time to send himself into space to go back in time until the loop was broken and he was rescued. Imagine how many times he had to go through that loop to finally see his daughter die? Like... srsly.
However, the idea of an altered time line is a paradox, as it's made clear before that the past can't be changed. For Cooper it may seem the present, but the timeline where he manipulates the watch is already set.
It's the same idea like the movie Timecrimes.
That leads me to the conclusion that time wasn't changed, and he was always going to give the daughter the data. But that renders the 5th dimension pretty useless Unless we'd include multiverses in the equation...
Mathematics. Law of averages. Let a complex system repeat itself long enough, eventually something surprising might occur. That, too, is in God's plan.
Well he did do something in that room that made an effect, that's clear
My guess is that white flash you see after the room collapses is the transition to another plane in the multiverse where humanity is saved. That way the timeline doesn't have to be changed, just branched. Perhaps that was the ultimate goal of the 5th dimensional beings; traveling through the 6th dimension.
Edit: but they needed loooove for that
Haha spot on
I still really liked the movie though.
Quote:
That wasn’t the only major change from the script’s initial drafts. The gravitational anomalies that pointed Cooper and his daughter toward the remnants of NASA were initially supposed to be gravity waves emanating from the destruction of a neutron star via black hole. Since the waves could only be produced by something so catastrophic, and we know nothing like that exists in our solar system, the waves detected must be coming out of some wormhole close to us, Kip Thorne explained to the audience.
The waves were also supposed to be detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravity-Wave Observatory or LIGO, the construction of which Kip Thorne spearheaded. “That was very near and dear to me,” Thorne said, “but Chris thought it was too much science for the public to digest at once.”
