even though i knew it wouldnt do any good, i decided to grab the 'most recent' update for my board this morning and flashed the bios

restart the computer... error: reading failed.

i mean i got the problem sorted after shitting many bricks, but jesus christ, this is why i hate updating things. things always work fine until theyre updated. updates are the worst.

I guess it's too complicated for the software developer to simply check if the WMF is installed eh?

Well same here, Meltdown safe, Spectre vulnerable. My mainboard is ancient, I doubt there will be any bios update, ever. Newest bios is still from 2013 and I already installed it back then.

Let's be honest... I doubt any of us will run into a spectre infestation. At least not if you are careful. I mean, yes, everything is possible but I think it's unlikely.

It surely is one more reason to upgrade soon.

Then again... maybe I'm just naive about this... but it's less stressful than being paranoid about it Laughing

^^Exactly^^

I'm not patching anything, nor updating any BIOS code, I'll leave it as it is. I plan to get a new mainboard & CPU soon anyway, so I'll live with the risk for now.

It's all in the hands of the Citadel Council, only they can decide who deserves to be awarded with the Spectre badge based on achievements and internet history xD

Spectre can't be patched globally via software OS update like with Meltdown. Software wise it can be semi-fixed by updating compilers and rebuilding executables but this will only make attack more difficult to perform.

Methinks it will be almost the same with BIOS updates. Variant 1 fixed, variant 2 more difficult to perform.

There won't be complete fixes for both of these for the next 2-3 years.

Benchmarks from old and new Intel CPUs and Ryzen

No real difference in gaming performance for any CPU.

Intel gets fucked really good for SSD performance though:

And some more infos for Haswell / Broadwell users:

Intel Security Issue Update: Addressing Reboot Issues
Quote:
As Intel CEO Brian Krzanich emphasized in his Security-First Pledge, Intel is committed to transparency in reporting progress in handling the Google Project Zero exploits.

We have received reports from a few customers of higher system reboots after applying firmware updates. Specifically, these systems are running Intel Broadwell and Haswell CPUs for both client and data center. We are working quickly with these customers to understand, diagnose and address this reboot issue. If this requires a revised firmware update from Intel, we will distribute that update through the normal channels. We are also working directly with data center customers to discuss the issue.

End-users should continue to apply updates recommended by their system and operating system providers.

https://newsroom.intel.com/news/intel-security-issue-update-addressing-reboot-issues/

Funny how he recommends users to keep updating their system, when shit like this just happened.

LOL Says Win Management Framework 5 or above is not installed Laughing

So it needs an extra installation just to do a PoC vulnerability check on a fully updated win8 OS? Excellent piece of software! How about I don't install extra shit? Laughing

No 'extra' installation here, but then again, my system is backwards with having a basic Win10 setup, so I expect that Smile It does say you need WMF 5 in requirements though, so there ya go.
