I get ya, but it was still a bit of a derogatory term back then too. Just people expanded what it meant.
But both then and now it still ecompasses the 'try hards' so to speak. The ones that overly and artificially try to be too nice thinking "If I am nice to you, you will give me the sex".
Just modern times dropped including the 'shy but sweet nerdy guy' like in the oversaturated 80's high school movies trope. But same in both eras of 'nice guys finish last, woe-is-me' mentality. That phase has been around forever.

Should i mention I had one...I wore all the time when I was 18-19? Granted it wasn't AS cheesy then in mid 90's and didn't have the stigma it does now. (But is when the stigma of it was was starting to seed.)

Mostly because I always wear a hat out, and baseball style caps suck...because in US hard to find one that isn't for a sports team. And 101 people want to talk to you about whatever team is on it, and I know fuck all about sports, I just wanted a hat.
I eventually settled on hats like this for last 15 years or so:
(not me in the pic, random google result)

I'm too use to the style I have now..lol
I like the top one in those pics, the flat top cadet looking one. Comfortable as shit. My wife likes the look of the bottom pics, driver cap style on me better. So I just have a couple of both.

Maybe its a US thing, but any guy over say like 35 with a ballcap style hat is assumed to be balding underneath. No idea why JUST that type, but it's the stereotype assumption. And I still got all my hair so dont want people assuming I wear a hat because I am bald or balding. So past the age where a ballcaps is a thing i want to wear..lol

edit: we have totally stolen this topic for random conversation.

Kinda the same thing here, or just into hiphop/rap. My dad is 57 years old and all of a sudden starting wearing a NY cap after some bald remarks from my stepmother. But to be honest he looks 10 years younger with it. Black dont crack as they say Wink Sidenote: He is strangely brown/black to be indian Surprised
