It is said that during some scenes, James Gandolfini inserted a small stone in his shoe to anger him, making him play the role of Tony Soprano more authentically
yeah it's pretty common for actors to use tricks like that... He was a really incredible actor.
I watched it again (4th time or something) until season 4 some months ago, should pick it up again
Rewatching this masterpiece again, almost done with season 3, and already almost cant stand carmela again, and knowing she is even a bigger bitch in the future .
Btw read some trivia on imdb

I was about AJ's age when I accidentally watched the first season of the show, it felt enjoyable but...I never thought about watching more of it because of its seemingly rather standardized mob-style which didn't really bring anything new to my table. Madonn', teenager me was a dumb ass gabagool. I'm glad that I gave it another proper shot after all this time. The more the show progresses, the more its apparent 'Murican circus of clichès takes the backseat and its characters start to unveil nuances, depth and complex personality traits as well as weaknesses that make them vulnerable and ultimately believable. They're still unredeemable assholes (all of them really ) but they definitely carry the charisma and charming distinctiveness that grow on you. The writing is quality and can jump from comedic to somber in a heartbeat with scenes and specific dialogues that would have a hard time being greenlighted by the suits working in there today. Additions such as Richie Aprile, Ralph Cifaretto, Tony Blundetto, Johnny Sack and Vito alongside the bizarre situations connected to them make each season unique and remarkable as well.
It's impressive how every single actor perfectly matches their character in the show in terms of mannerisms and attitude, it's something that HBO used to be truly excellent at. Gandolfini isn't just playing Tony, he is Tony. His unpredictable mood swings, the random deja-vu's and raptuses, the smiles that could either be sincere or mean a shitton of trouble, a lovable sociopath who serves as the absolute core of the show and delivers one of the most memorable and believable performances in television history. Pace all'anima sua :')
The show doesn't quite reach my personal sacred HBO temple where The Wire, Band of Brothers and Deadwood sit (in that order), but it definitely collocates itself right up there among the absolute greats. And the more we delve into "modernity" with its neutered thematics pushed by stugots, the more I can appreciate a genuine production like this. It's a bittersweet sensation
It's on my all time favourite, top 10 i think.. tho after all these years and great shows it's really hard to make a top 10. After rewatching some of my all time fav shows it's clear to me that 2 shows are perfect and will probably be my number 1 and 2 (no order) and they are The Wire and Breaking Bad, both are just perfect for me, from first episode to last.
The Sopranos is great and i will gladly rewatch it in the future, it does have one big major downside imo.. it has the worst ending i have ever seen. I saw bad ending like Dexter and the original The X-Files or Lost lol, ofc some other shows i liked even didn't have an ending since they were cancelled, but this kind of shit, sorry for my language.. that i've never seen.
Shame really as the series deserved better then:
Spoiler:
having a black screen and "imagine what happened by yourself" ending.
I liked the ending, it's a go with your gut feeling, which will be different for everyone after watching the show for so long, so it makes sense.. maybe it just continues forever, like a fade out of a song (some people find that really cheesy, some people likes it). i personally don't mind it. but also endings overall are totally overrated, i don't care the least for them either in music, games or movies, never really have. Endings are like death, yes it will happen but who cares, its the journey that matters.
It's on my top 5 i believe... haven't really done a top 5 list in ages, The Shield is equally good and it would also be on the top 5. there's been some good shows in the recent years but those two are hard to beat.. this is mainly due to the gigantic amount of interesting and involving characters. for me that's the most important aspect of a series, i just hate watching longer series with perhaps 3-4 good characters, these easily have 20 characters+ that i just love and find very interesting and involving..
Saw this bump and assumed it was news on the prequel...
Prequel was released ~4 years ago dood:
Curious thing happened I just watched this sketch and when the "new guy" showed up I immediately thought he was played by actor Alessandro Nivola, checked the credits and turns out it's actually singer Adam Levine (Maroon 5). Then I jumped to IMDb to check this upcoming prequel movie which I didn't know about and turns out the main character is played by... Alessandro Nivola!
It's incredibly difficult to capture the magic of the show and replicate a fraction of it in a single modern pre-movie, but considering the people attached to the project this definitely is our best (and only) shot. Let's hope it will be an adequate and fitting addition that doesn't taste too much like stale prosciutto. Btw, "Many Saints" in the title is the literal translation of Moltisanti
if you look at it as a sopranos story then its ok, but as a standalone its not really a big mob movie or has anything to show. so many years after the show ended so maybe they could come up with a little bit more?
more sequels or maybe a mini series would have been better
That was a weird one, like a comare that steals your wallet while she lets you grab her tits. Was it the prequel that the glorious Sopranos deserved? No, not really, sadly. Was it still passable? Yes..and no, it depends. It mixes different styles together with no clear direction nor purpose, and with its storylines that obviously feel rushed, lacking the charm and sense of tension of the (excellent) show. Not being able to provide proper character development due to the limited nature of the movie format definitely was a problem here.
The many moments of fan service hamfisted into it were a mixed bag, a few decent references couldn't salvage the semi-parodic aftertaste of the others (including some of the recreations of the main characters in their younger days). The timelines didn't make complete sense either, especially the ones involving Silvio and Big Pussy. On the bright side, both Alessandro Nivola as Dickie Moltisanti and Vera Farmiga as Livia were genuinely good, while as for Gandolfini Jr...well, he did have potential but ultimately, he was underused. A missed opportunity more than anything else, it tasted like a cake made with memberberries and mouldy ricotta.
