Ugh dammit. Why would that even amount to 5%? Isn't dumping the right database a mostly automatic process?
Would be nice if we could just get a dump and then switch the host altogether.

Anyone have the ability to crawl and DB all content from this site?

I think when we thought about it the first testing version proved to be extremely slow Razz

Let them dump it and we do something about the conversion on another host?

Thank you for all your work though Smile

Couldn't you just follow the database upgrade path from phpBB2 > latest or required version? It looks like a conversion script and documentation is provided for the process. Im presuming the db/site is just stock right?

the alternative is bad, site eventually dies and then god help us reddit, steam boards or twitter etc.

Apparently this would be super difficult due to the level of customisation here.

But with the amount of work that already went into the new version, writing a conversion script would probably happen if the chance even arose, no?

Heck if I wasn't preoccupied with something actually important for the next few weeks, even I would probably attempt it with my very limited knowledge on the topic Very Happy

Yeah same, I wish I had a minimum amount of knowledge about this sort of stuff, but websites and databases are like ancient alien signs to me Sad Razz

It's not THAT bad for me actually. I'm confident I would produce a technically valid (perhaps partial) conversion at some point. The resulting posts may turn into ancient align signs or moon runes though Cool Face

Dumping it wouldn't take long (though I imagine it's quite large), but making a database from an ancient version of phpbb work in a modern version would

Hey, so picking this back up. We need to do something. I have a strong suspicion the hump won't be here for much longer.

If you're able to write something like a Java app that will crawl the site and dump content, I'd really appreciate giving that a go. Maybe we could each take a sub-forum, or heck I'll just run it from my machines.

All I'm suggesting at this point is a simple database which has the following tables:

* A user table which collects usernames as it goes. At minimum it just needs to store the username, nothing else.
* Table(s) which store topics, by sub-forum, and posts within those topics. Again, we could keep this simple for the moment - and just have the script use a moderator account, click "edit" from each post, and then dump the contents. It would obviously need some form of ordering - but you can get individual post numbers from the URL generated by the EDIT or DELETE button which mods have access too.

Is this something you could write relatively easily? Let's take this one step at a time. Let's first look at snapshotting the current DB, then we'll work on converting together (or with some outside funded help).

I'll also have one last dash attempt at getting an admin to provide me/us with DB dumps too.

Terrible idea. And it'll take years. And kill the hump in the process. And from your description, you clearly have no idea of just how much shit actually needs to get dumped to be able to import it into a new installation effectively.

I've got a partial DB dump that I need to take a look at, I just haven't had the will to do so in the little spare time I have. I have no idea what's in it, I just completely lost interest since it took a year to get it.

So the DB dump has been provided - is there anything waiting on admins? If so, please let me know. But if not, can someone provide an update on the situation here? maybe there are others willing to pick this up and finish (given we are so close)...

IMOO they should provide a full DB dump before the place dies. If they're worried about us reading PMs and that sort of thing, they should simply omit them, I doubt many would care if those were lost

Don't think they care about that because Pax is the new admin and we all know he spilled the beans on PM's once.

Still fishing!

Jenni is the new admin. Get it right if you're going to leak info.

PS Werelds can you please make a statement about your intents here?
