I mostly dislike Black metal, but some Dimmu borgir stuff is very good-
Great melody!
Is this considered Black Metal? Forgive my extremely lay opinion , but doesn't this fall whitin the Melodic branch of Metal?
edit: well I checked and seems that they're a symphonic black metal group. =)
Dimmu Borgir is more like Melodic Black Metal
Anyway, Black Metal has always been more symphonic than the early days of Death Metal.
Aside some core musical differences, the main distinction between the two genres, Death and Black, is that while originally Death Metal themes focused more on the exploitation of the flesh and imaginary and fetish for Death and Suffering, Black Metal focused more on Black Arts, Satanism, Ritualism and Superstition, on the early days Black Metal has also been associated with a series of unfortunate "extra-curricular" activities such as burning of churches, murders and suicides.
Both genres have evolved to a great extent since then, I don't follow to much modern day Black Metal so I can't say exactly what it has evolved into, but as for Death Metal, it has evolved in so many different ways, branching into yet another considerable number of sub genres, that range from the most obvious such as Melodic Death Metal and Technical Death Metal to some Fusion genres, and etc.
Nowadays modern Death Metal bands don't necessarily focus on themes such as Death and the possibilities of suffering, many notable bands have evolved into more philosophic and non brutal themes, an excellent example that is very obvious is the following.

I find the whole description/genre "melodic black metal" to be absurd.
If you want to play melodic stuff go join depeche mode or something.
You enjoy repeating yourself don't you?
You should play with a popular artist, I find that making hip hop tunes is something that you probably love, the riffs repeat themselves in a way that probably speaks to you on a personal level

J/k- Did change death to black though.
Was never really a fan melodic death. At the gates were super popular of course, but not that big of a fan myself. Have seen them a year or two ago and they did a good gig. And then all the billions of band that followed.
Melodic black I have never heard. Well maybe satyricon could be considered it I guess.
No, personally I like the old school stuff better. It´s just more evil.

An example:
That's the difference between us, I have never listened to Metal because I wanted to see just how evil they could sound, I always enjoyed Metal, more than every other genre of Modern Music, because I appreciated their complex symphonic and orchestral rhythmic writing and the inherent sense of empowerment, it is fun to see just how some bands struggle to try to appear more evil than the one before when imo they are missing the point completely, obviously they want to sell and satisfy their targeted niche, but still, what I have found is that with some few notable exceptions, all commercial Metal is absolutely terrible, technically and musically speaking most great bands are mostly underground and fail to make a living out of their music, which is very sad really because they are trying to stay true to what music is supposed to be as opposed to what the average dumb fuck wants it to be.

Yep, there is a war against commercial shit music going on right now.
They have the numbers, but we have the guns!
I don´t even consider the chance for mainstream music to be metal/punk/hc/etc. It´s impossible, because it´s everything but. It´s the opposite.
My roots come from punk. The idea of looking and behaving like an avarage joe is no go. Obviously the music as well. No way they will listen to distorted chainsaw guitars, machine gun drums, death agony screams and bulldozer bass. In the 80´s the bands perfected this imho. Of course one can go your way also, where the complexity scares them off.
Ronhrin.. u actually believe that ur smarter than the masses ? or superior ? for listening to metal and not liking popular music ?
You cannot expect me to answer a question that is flawed from the beginning, Your failure to follow an argumentation amazes me.
No, I'm not smarter or superior to anyone else, in fact, I share the belief that everyone is just the same, QI measure is an absolute joke, but I will not even develop that subject, the fact isn't that I think of myself better than anyone else, the fact is that considering that the potential of everyone is averagely the same, when I see people taking exclusive pride on their stupidity and having despise for knowledge and art, it just angers me.
What makes me so passionate and angered by these subjects is not that people are genetically going dumber, is that the masses choose to go dumber and discard everything that was once honorable and appreciated for what it was.
As times go by, people just have a mentality that "simpler is better" this perspective might apply to some things, when you have a Car that is easier and more accessible to drive for example, but when it comes to art, it's supposed to be complex, it is supposed to transpire the human effort and expertise that was put forward into creating it, so anything that is easy and that anyone can repeat at will can never be art.
That's the point I'm trying to make, but people like you always find away to find a secondary meaning in what's said instead of understanding what I'm arguing here and why.

Now write that in a bit simpler way so he can understand you.
Pfft, if a pig comes in this car to arrest me, I would gladly surrender myself, and while in the car, use that concealed weapon I would have hidden where the sun don't shine.
