Just how much performance will I actually miss with these midrange SSD's?

quite a lot actually, for example, here's Intel 330 review with graphs (in these graphs of course there are many other popular SSDs). http://www.anandtech.com/show/5817/the-intel-ssd-330-review-60gb-120gb-180gb/5

Like I said, difference is large on paper but not noticeable in real use. You won't notice the difference. Sequential read/write speeds just don't matter much for a normal user.

And I know because I have an old Corsair with 120MB/s speeds, and new Samsung 830 with 550MB/s. Sammy might be slightly faster when copying large files, but it's unlikely you will use an SSD for data storage. You'll use it for OS and apps, and in that aspect I can't tell the difference between the two.

Well... like BearishSun said, I don't need couple of ms quicker app loading time.
Guess I'll stick to midrange for a start Smile

Gonna pick something I like most by the ads I gues Very Happy

You can get a last gen vertex 3 and you wouldn't notice the difference between it and the vertex 4. Most users aren't using their SSD's for large file storage. Not to mention last-gen drives are allready fast as fuck as it is.

what's the point? Vertex3 120GB is just 10 euros cheaper than Vertex4 128GB. Take into account 8GB difference in size and price/GB becomes almost identical. why do people here keep recommending others to buy old shit, when new is same price?!?

i would understand if it was 2x price difference, but now... Question Confused

Just to come back on the OCZ is bad:

Look my usage on it.
I use it as a normal HDD, move games to it when i feel like playing one and move them away to another hdd if i finished it.
If OCZ was THAT bad, my ssd would had died even before i bought it...

And i'm not even running latest firmware (what i should do, but too lazy Razz)

Stop being so lazy then! Get the latest firmware, it'll extend the life of the drive Smile

... but yeah, that looks pretty good to me. As much as I want a Vert3/4 or one of the high end Intel drives, I think that 60GB Vert2E is far too cheap to pass up Shocked

Heh, i have learned not to mess with firmware unless shit starts to go bad Razz

About that V2, i had a customer with one. That one crashed WITH the lastest firmware after 3 months usage.

She only plays hyves (kinda like FB) flash games and talks on skype now and then. Nothing more, nothing less.
Still it died on us after 3 months...

So going for V2... meh... I personally wouldn't do it.

I've been running a Vertex 3 120GB for over a year as well and i've had zero issues since the 2.15 firmware came out last october.

For real world usage and the price I think the OCZ drives are a great choice. In the future I won't be getting one again as I have more money to blow on Intel drives these days, but for people trying to save money I think they are an excellent choice.

I know and i'm not saying that they are bad.
But i buy based on what i see and experience myself most of the time, and that a drive could cash of so little usage has decided that, for me, a V2 is a no-go.

V3 on the other hand, i have now in total made like 7 people get one.
So OCZ if you are reading this, thanks to me and including me, i got 8 people your drive Very Happy Razz

I've had my Vertex2E 90GB as system drive (+ install games to it regularly) and it hasn't funked up a single time. It's as fast and fresh as it was 1.5+ years ago when I got it.

I finally had time to actually order a Vertex4. Smile
Gonna install it during the weekend.
Is there some special tweaking I have to do to Win7 for it to function nice and easy?
I've heard some things but I want a sort of guide or something. That is, IF there is something to tweak.

Latest gen SSDs dont require too much OS tweaking. Just install the OS in AHCI mode. I would also decrease the space reserved for system restore. I personally do change 1 thing though because I use my desktop a lot. I have the desktop and download location changed to a directory on the mechanical drive

I usually decrease the System restore size anyway.
Guess I'll have to check if Windows identifies my SSD properly and disables the defragmentation.

I just ordered the OCZ Vertex 4 Series SATA III 2.5" SSD 128GB. I checked out Anandtechs review of the drive with the new 1.5 (and 1.4) firmwares and they make all the difference in the world.

And the price... Dammit, sooooo cheap, £77/$125/€97

In a month I will have been using my Vertex 3 for a year. Still runs as good as it did on day 1, and I move steam games back and forth on it on a very frequent basis.
