Is it safe to install mobo bios update for Windows 8 in a Windows 7 PC?
I ask this for one of my buddies who needs that update to get a new GPU running.
The bios update available for his mobo is only for those using Windows 8 but he's using Windows 7.

That's odd.... I wouldn't think a mobo could even be OS specific...

As far as a I know no bios update cares about the OS. since its all 'pre-os' agnostic.

If some MB manufacturer did make some update for an OS, say something to do with drive reading, or bug exposed from newer OS. Id wager that it shouldn't break other OSs. that would be bad practice and a shitstorm waiting to happen on open tickets.
I COULD be wrong and it something new now a days, but I've never seen a bios update fubar usage on any special OS in all the time I've dealt with computers. (i've seen bios updates break booting at all, even to post..but those was bad updates, no anything to do with the OS on it.)

Probably the "secure boot" and UEFI compatibility with Windows 8 (And 8.1) or how it's called, not the actual OS as such. Smile

Features in the BIOS relating to Windows 8, fast boot, secure boot, yada yada, only function if said OS is installed, ignored/not used if not Smile

He needs a BIOS update for a new GPU support? Weird, I thought of only CPU or RAM needing that.
