Hi all,

I'm a little bit pissed right now I must say.

So I connected my USB Disk to my PC and startet a Steam backup & restore of a dozend games that I would like to restore on my "Mini-Me" project PC.

Total games volume: 83 Gb

I checked that it is started correctly, then I went to the movies and saw Galaxies of the Gardener (9.2/10, IMHO).

When I came back I'd expected it to be finished by then, only to find out it hanged at some game. So I checked the total written data size, it was only 5.2 Gb.
So in other words, he copied 2.5 games and then stopped for 4 hours right there.

So the question naturally arises to me:

Is there an alternative and safe way to backup & restore Steam games at all,
without using the official backup & restore functionality?

Confused

Just copy the "steamapps\common" folder. You don't need to do anything else Smile I do this whenever I reinstall my PC and have to reinstall Steam.

Well I just copy the *entire* Steam folder and then when I reinstall Steam, I make sure it's installed to the same folder - but yes, it works. Nowadays I have a dedicated partition for Steam so when I reinstall my PC I don't have to do anything except reinstall Steam (and that's just to make sure everything is "configured" properly)

I 2nd this. Works fine. Just don't copy over the folder of games you don't want. No worries.

Steam will restore those registry entries.

My Steam games are anywhere but my primary drive and they have been for years. When I format, I install Steam, add that folder on that drive to the library (and before they added that, I simply installed Steam to its old location). When it then starts, it simply checks what files are in there, matches them up to your library (which means they get updates already at that point) and verifies them when you first start them again.

Yeah, that new addition is MOST helpful on Steam. Finally being able to specify where to install games has helped immensely.

In steam also make sure to set the standard download folder of steams to the corret position. For me CTRL + C / CTRL + V of steamapps worked too.

Try and run one of them. It will go through the motions of trying to download it and detect the existing files.

I have system on ssd c: drive and all steam games installed on a separate ssd drive d:.

Then when ever I have to do a full wipe of c: drive I simply re install steam and point it to the d: drive steam folder.

I love steam for this reason. Never had a single game fail this way.
