As i see it.... over time... Expectations grew, development requirements went up, this is next gen baby, developers seem to have little time to polish and grow a quality game. Theres too much focus on presentation and thats graphical and physics design, must take a LOT of time to get it right. So polish on gameplay mechanics, the feel of the game seem to take a dip. Time constrain?

Dont know... i feel like its that, the expectations from the public require a hell of a presentation and thats whats on priority. Then you have Witcher 3 which has a different approach. I havent finished it so im gonna stfu. Razz

You're getting old and bitter.

I'm 41, going on 42 and I find that there are games prior that I enjoy more than most titles you list there...and I'm talking games as far back as the C-64 days. In fact, when everyone starts bitching about tweaking graphics, I laugh to myself because I remember how much worse it was so I'm pretty content with my 970 vid card on default settings. I tend to prefer gameplay over graphics

Try Chaos Rising because is really good.

Also (by genre):
Action - Stealth:
Hitman (2016), Mark of the Ninja, The Binding of Isaac (roguelite), Hotline Miami, Darksiders

Adventure:
SOMA, Ori and the Blind Forest, STASIS, Don't Starve (survival), Trine 2, Limbo, Inside, Deadlight, Braid (platformer), Portal 1 & 2, The Wolf Among US

RPG:
Dark Souls, Dark Souls III, Wasteland 2, Path of Exile, Terraria, Legend of Grimrock 2, Shadowrun Dragonfall, Exanima (Early Access), Bastion, Transistor, Fallout: New Vegas, Sunless Sea

Strategy:
Endless Legend, Civilization VI, Door Kickers, Wargame: Airland Battle.

Shooter:
DOOM, Titanfall 2, Metro: Last Light, Wolfenstein: The New Order, FEAR, ARMA 3

I went a little crazy with this list and still missed some (no multiplayer only), but take your pick. Very Happy

I mean you can't account for taste or disliking games just because they changed the formula.

Fallout New Vegas
the Dark Souls games
Red Dead Redemption (if you include console exclusive)
Dragon Age Origins
LA Noire
Portal 2
The Walking Dead (yes, telltale bs, whatever, if you don't like the genre its fine but season 1 was really great)
Hotline Miami
Metro 2033 and Last Light
Far Cry 3
Tales from the Borderlands (again if you hate the taletale formula probably not for you)
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Spec Ops The Line (not really for the gameplay, but its quite the experience in its own way)
FTL
GTA 5
Bastion & Transistor

I mean, these are all just games that came to mind fairly quick and you probably don't agree with some/most or any of them since I doubt you haven't played at least a few of the ones I mentioned.

They're not in any particular order, just as they came to mind. And honestly there's probably a lot more that I just can't think of atm.

I like Shogun 2 Total War, I thought it was a good return to form.

Also I consider Mass Effect 2 the best of the series because I liked the combat and the dialogue. The overall plot is of limited scope but still it is my favourite because of SO MANY good characters.

ME 2 was the best in the series because it has the best end sequence/end level of the 3 and honestly one of the best in gaming imo, not only is it great by itself but it ties in with what you did all game and makes it worth it.

Oh, yes, the ending was one of the most amazing gaming experiences in my life, I should have mentioned it. It really makes the game's concept of gathering allies worth it. And getting loyalty for them, doing the upgrades on your ship and having basic knowledge of the abilities/skills of the characters.

And they also took the time to create the "super special fail" non-canon ending where everyone dies lol, I have watched that video 2-3 times, I always laugh my ass off.

What was so amazing? Not only the villain in ME1 was way better, but evil Shepard dying was plain stupid. They nailed the characters in ME2 and part of that threatening atmosphere of impending spacial doom, but other than that, the game was consolized to nonredeemable levels.

Derpification is one thing, but not all games today are "derpified". I really think that getting old and having "seen it all, done it all" plays a major role.

I am lucky in the sense that I can still enjoy games today even after 25+ years of gaming (turned 33), but yeah, I don't get as immersed as back then.

You can look through my completion log for games you might have missed. not all are top tier obviously, but a lot of the titles you mention, are ones i'd put on the top shelf, or just underneath it, so might be worth browsing through it.

That's correct, it all slowly started in that era (although the big bang in terms of streamlining happened one generation later).

Invisible War was perhaps the prime example of such effect. To me it felt absolutely shocking for all the wrong reasons, it was the moment that I realized the "shift" in terms of focus from developers and publishers, with our PC taking the backseat and being downgraded from pilot to simple passenger (or even to illegal migrant in some cases).

We're still living through the devastating effects of such couchaclysm, though despite the indecent amount of garbage, disappointments and indecent console ports, I believe there have still been good signs and examples during the recent years, and plenty of enjoyable titles, for me at least.

It's a complicated hobby though, that requires strong willpower, patience and the ability to accept compromises.
From swallowing disgusting corporate decisions to trying to accept the design ones for the masses, by finding excamotages to make games more challenging (since the standard difficulty these days is generally laughable) or interesting with mods and the work of the community. Surviving and finding entertainment value is very much possible, although damn, it can be hard at times. Razz

What about before 1998?

Cool Face

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Still more than enough good games coming out after that time.

You are just a hater and/or hipster against modern games.

Gaming got really popular in late 2000's so publishers shifted focus to the mass market for mega $$$. So instead of passion projects and artistic visions we started to see more and more machine like copy pasting of proven formulas with fancy graphics and ad campaigns. We still get great games amongst the generic trash so it's not all bad. The ratio is just heavily weighted towards machine made crap more then before.

edit: by machine made copy paste I'm only referring to the structure and gameplay of a game, not the writing or art/audio design. Someone say ubisoft? Very Happy
