Quote: | Speedball 2 - Remember the Pain
Paying Respect to a Gaming Legend
Berlin, March 2, 2007: Speedball 2 spread like a wildfire in 1990. With its unique mix of future sports, uncompromising action, and riveting gameplay, the product became a legend in its own time: over two million gamers enjoyed it across all platforms.
Owing to the metallic graphic elements and a TV-style presentation, Speedball 2 created a grippingly futuristic setting. Heavily armoured and prepared for the worst, modern gladiators entered the arena to fight fierce battles to the death. Regularly, all hell would break loose when the steel ball was catapulted onto the field from the kick-off point. In the rush for the ball, brutal melees would ensue. Those who had captured the ball commanded their teams in a mad charge towards the opposing team?s goal, smashing through the defenders and suffering their head-on body checks. With uncompromising resilience, players drove their teams upwards in the league. With implemented team management, a two-player-mode and a ranking and championship system, Speedball 2 proved a milestone for the modern multiplayer scene. The press recognised the title?s groundbreaking achievement and showered the game with praise and awards.
Developer heroes
The true rock stars of the scene, the Bitmap Brothers, were responsible for the development of Speedball 2. Apart from this title, the British game manufacturer, founded in 1987, was behind such classics as Xenon Megablast, The Chaos Engine, Gods, Magic Pockets and Z.
Speedball 2 pulls all registers
In the third quarter of 2007, Frogster Interactive is set to publish Speedball 2 as the longed-for sequel to the Amiga classic. The new release on PC transforms the futuristic game setting with the help of state-of-the-art technology into a high-speed online sports spectacle. Offering international leagues, a large-scale ranking system and a virtual marketplace, Seite 2 von 2
Speedball 2 pulls all the registers of modern multiplayer gaming action. Fully customisable characters from cyborg to amazon, dynamic sports battles, and continuous community support will convince sports simulation enthusiasts, action fans, and e-sports cracks likewise. Since December 2006, a newsletter on the game has been providing exclusive information to subscribers about news relating to game development progress. Registrees regularly receive news before they are officially released, unpublished material, and access to competitions. There a "remake" 5-6 years ago by another company IIRC. The game was boring as hell, not mention damned hard
Looking forward to a real sequel to this classic :b:

Considering buying it on Steam tonight, but I really want to wait to get a boxed retail copy. The game looks amazing.

Mahjik wrote: | I did buy it last night. Here are my quick observations:
1. It gives me an error when I try to change the resolution in the game. I'm on Vista so I don't know if its an OS problem or something else. Luckily, the configuration files are just standard text, so I was able to edit the files for widescreen resolutions.
2. It seems to ONLY default to the first controller in the list. This forced me to unplug my driving wheel/pedals as well as my shifter so it would recognize my game pad. That's just sad.
3. Once you start playing the game, it brings back all the goodness of the old Speedball 2 with some updated graphics.
4. Controls that a while to get used to. I don't seem to feel the same accuracy as I did with the old game (i.e. throwing the ball at the power ups on the sides of the walls). However, that could be because I've only played this new one once or twice.
Lastly, if you are expecting a complete new/different game from the old Speedball; this isn't it. This is a basic remake of the exact gameplay with a new game engine. That's not a bad thing IMO but may put some people off.
I'm still trying to figure out the power ups and such, but its a fun distraction from some of the other games out there.
The FAQ has been provided on their site which deals with the issues above. My main issue still has to do with the controller config. In this day and age, its inexcusable not to realize that someone will have more than one game controller connected.
Other than that, it is definitely a game worthy of the Speedball name. |

Gonna try out HATRED's release, then buy it when it hits US retail (I would buy it on Steam now, but I want it in a box). I love Speedball, and want to support this remake.

Hmm...I might pass on HATRED's release after all. Too lazy. Maybe UNLEASHED will do a Steam-free release, the same way they did with Lost Planet.

Does this release work for anybody? It starts to install and I get the usual "Steam servers are curently busy ..."
I tried with the unpatched Steam and with the undead patch.

It's too bad Hatred don't respect Nforce. I have a little tip for them : You'll either use the steam content files with a patched Steam or an emulator, OR use a non-steamed ... steamrip.
Their shitty "normal installer", memory patcher crap is bound to have problems, it's not a proper solution.
Maybe they should stick to their normal Securom wh0ring, they're only good for that. Pfff , I just remembered that Lost Planet useless/dupe release.
EDIT: And stop putting that craptro with the shitty music in your releases, even skidrow's better.
