Hollowpoint is a futuristic combat adventure in which players create and train clandestine teams of operatives to shoot bad guys in a neon world full of nasty corporations and killer robots. Players can take on the missions in solo or four-player cooperative modes.
Taglined 'Never a Routine Mission,' Hollowpoint is scheduled for PlayStation 4 and Windows PC in 2015.
PCGamesN recently experienced the game and brought in heaps of interesting details on its action-filled game mechanics and original co-op mode.
As far as the storyline goes, there is nothing we do not know already. The game is set in a futuristic world where players assume the role of a commando waging war against other mercenaries – for money, of course.
Similar to Crackdown, the game features a deep character progression system, allowing players to turn their everyday mercenary into nearly a superhero.
One of the coolest features of the game is that players can switch among different characters at will. This makes up for tackling various situations as effectively as possible.
Rob Zacny notes that the game is not simply a 2D side-scroller, but a mixture of 2D and 3D planes which works pretty well.
Players can switch to 2D-plane, move side to side, and shoot in an arc or they can switch into a 3D over-the-shoulder camera and shoot down the enemies in the background. However, it is the game’s co-op mode which takes the crown:
“But the best part was the way the two characters, and the two layers of the action, interacted with each other,” Zacny notes. “They did things like leapfrog through a heavily defended room, with one character popping into the over-the-shoulder 3D camera to suppress incoming enemies in the 3D layer, while the other character charged across the level to another good cover point, at which point their rolls flipped.”
Coming to the game’s missions, they are not “strictly scripted”. Instead these missions start with a minor script which then leads to an objective on procedurally generated maps. Once an objective is completed, a second objective is displayed which is tied to another script.
Featuring extensive customization options and reward to keep players hooked for a long time, HollowPoint is definitely a shooter to check out in 2015 for Playstation 4 and PC.
Retro and arcade-styled, it combined Contra-like shooting action with a 2.5D perspective and co-op gameplay. It was then being created by Crackdown 2 developers Ruffian Games and was to be published by Paradox Interactive, but development was suspended in the summer of 2015 as Paradox and Ruffian severed their ties. Paradox said they'd evaluate the project before making a final decision on its future, and then we heard nothing. That is until now.
Yorkshire-based studio Red Kite Games has just announced the acquisition of the IP and the development of a new game based on the very same concept and style. It's the first home-cooked IP for the outfit, after collaborating in AAA projects with a range of publishers.
