This sucks. Their forums were a nice place to discuss movies without strict moderation. Some of the boards had very active and old communities as well.

Quote:
IMDb is the world's most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb's message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb's message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb's social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb's editors and one another. IMDb's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

Because IMDb's message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they'd like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

What a retarded decision.

I always used the forums for movies / shows i'm not sure about if they are worth downloading.

Not gonna look on Facebook for some derps writing shitty meme opinions.

I don't know of any other large dedicated movie/TV forums. The only other place I sometimes check is r/movies, but usually just to find interesting stuff to watch.

This is a bad decision, but at the same time, the only thing I usually saw in those forums was either "This movie sucks, and you're a pleb if you like it", or the opposite, "This movie is great, if you don't get that you're dumb". Not all threads, but many of them.

But yeah, still a dumb decision, social media solves everything!

Bit daft, I find forums still better suited than quick-fix social media for discussions or rants

That being said, I never liked Imdb forums that much. Too restrictive on account creation and it had no effect when you looked at all the childish posts that were going around. That place was a cesspool, that being said you always had a few great threads per films so I'm going to miss reading those.

I only follow F1 and Sciencey bits on twitter and I mostly just do that by spending 10 minutes a day on it (just to check if I missed something) really hate that they push that 'be connected 24/7' shit on everything. So nope, this will just mean I'll have or read movie discussions on PtP and here then.

Personally I have never used them, but the tendency of late of treating traditional forums as something obsolete and useless is baffling to say the least. Not only they contain incredibly valuable (and organized) informations, but they're a cohesive and coherent way to promote discussions without resorting to short tweets, barfs and whatnot, which bastardize and streamline dialogue until it's no more. The same happened to the Bioware forums, now replaced by worthless social media propaganda.
inb4 we get shut down as well with a message out of the blue, inviting us to follow @NFOreborn instead and like the correlated NFObook page Okay

I much much prefer forums (or irc if that still existed Sad ) as they are about discussion of a topic rather than shameless self promotion of users like social media. Same with liking comments.. do i give a fuck about user X-Y's approval?? no.

Exactly, likewise..I don't use social medias either for that reason (the other one is that I'm fundamentally a grumpy cat that doesn't give a damn about gossip). My online activities have always been limited to the classic vintage forums, with the Humps now talking all my time. There are no valid alternatives really, for me at least :<

It's is absolutely mind boggling that they decided to shut down the message boards. I have been on their boards for 13 years now. Even though I wasn't as active as I used to be, I always lurked around to always find someone discussing about the movie, especially 80's stuff. It was also a great resource for having threads which explained and discussed complex movie plots, analysis and theories.

What is even more appalling is their reasoning behind it is "not being able to no provide a positive, useful experience" and users migrating to Fartbook & Twatter. Seriously?

Let's see those mediums run a proper discussion on movies. I guess we'll just need to have memes and one liners being the discussion standard from now on. Great. Fuck off IMDB! You bunch of

Does anyone know how to archive all the message boards? I know it sounds crazy, but I still find some reliable info from old movies there, and it would be a total loss if this documented, politely debated and resourceful content goes to waste forever. Yes, they still keep some old threads from rare movies worth preserving Smile

How much MBs or GBs would that be? I mean, it's text and a couple js, gifs and pngs right?

I guess they "concluded" that imdb users were leaving too many negative comments about the crap Hollywood released Laughing

I predict that in x years they will disable user rating system and imdb ratings will be formed based solely on reviews of so-called critics Very Happy

Forums are a dying breed sadly. I absolutely hate social media because it's filled with dumb annoying people who ruin any topic you bring up.

One example: a few years back I bought an arcade machine. I posted an image of my 7 year old nephew playing it on christmas day with a christmas tree in the background. I thought it was cute seeing my nephew playing these old games and having such fun but it seems some felt the need to comment on it. "A kid shouldn't be playing computer games on christmas day! He should be spending time with family!" Yes, fuck you too! It wasn't even a friend of mine but because my brother tagged my nephew, his family on his mother's side could see it ...
