good stuff. if they'll market this better than the previous games, it might get some fresh blood to get their hands on a computer and play. This never existing on consoles fills my heart with joy

The last time I replayed the game using the Update version with HD textures on and faux RTGI for ambient occlusion/global illumination it already looked substantially better than the original, but proper ray tracing + brand new models is definitely going to bring it to a whole new level of sexiness. Hopefully the MMod will be compatible with the new version, it's an essential improvement that makes it hard to go back to the vanilla gunplay.

No, just as with Portal RTX, you could just add the same textures and effects without ray tracing and it would be a vastly different experience from the original.

Of course adding ray tracing effects on top makes it even better.

Its still a good marketing move, because people equal Ray tracing to RTX.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Would be nice as a HL3 preorder bonus or something, but I guess no one is interested in making new original games anymore.

THIS.

To be fair, it's not developed by Valve, so there might be still hope.

Yeah, i mean, this has nothing to do with Valve. No reason to be angry. This is nvidia getting a bunch of modders and making a single team in order to specifically make a path traced HL2. Valve could be secretely making HL Alyx 2 or not, but it has nothing to do with this project

Nowadays Valve is making money with much more easier effort than making extra carzy good games. HL2 was a special game back in the day. Hopefully they will make third one at some point.

Well, we're talking about adding RTX to a 20-year old game. It kinds Is a gimmick. HL2 was a good game so it's nice but RTX isn't as impactful on modern games. DLSS is more important in that case.

RTX is great IF your hardware can handle it. More ofthen than not, it can't. That's why it is still rarely used though no game looks worse with RTX than without it. It's a great piece of technology but we are just not there yet. It will take years with AI what-not to make it possible without lowering the FPS to sub 30.

rtx is one thing, rtx remix is something else, it's a very extensive modding tool that can be beneficial for any game of course.

by that logic everything is a gimmick. u can fake many things in todays games sure but with games like cyberpunk or alan wake 2 it showed that it does make a difference. rtx is the next big thing and people should realize by now, just cuz it cripples performance suddenly its a gimmick cuz with it off it looks good too...but yeah with each new gpu generation performance will improve to the point there will only be rtx games. they are already pushing for this for games like spiderman 2 or ratched and clank ps5 where its only rtx on ps5

But it can. Every game on the market with RT is made around what the hardware can do at the time. Usually simpler reflections + shadows when Turing came out, in 2018. Heavier features when Ampere came out. Heavier still with Lovelace. Every single RT game, without exception can be played at 60+ frames. Naturally, its never going to be a high refreshrate affair, and of course you have to use upscalling and other AI stuff that we now have and that are becoming integrated in development from the start, they're never going away. But they're all playable and always were. Since ray tracing is super heavy, dont ever expect for gpus to run games with it at 300 frames/second for the latest games, that would mean not utilising the available power. Each paltry performance increase we'll get on gpus will get eaten by a more robust RT implementation.
