nXile Entertainment is planning a Kickstarter for The Bard's Tale IV. Details about the game are still light, but Fargo did say the team will be pulling from the original as far as overarching ideas go. From a story perspective, players will be returning to Skara Brae, where it all began. But on the gameplay side of things, Fargo is planning a deviation.

"Traditional turn-based combat," as Fargo calls it, bases turns on varying factors, creating battles in which different characters attacked at different times, often alternating between opposing sides. But in The Bard's Tale IV, teams attack all at once. This increases the pace of the combat, and allows for a different set of tactics than the traditional system might allow.

"There will be plenty of combat diversity and depth," Fargo said. "You look at something like Hearthstone, for example. It's sort of that going back-and-forth process, and you see the complexity and detail and strategy and nuance that can happen. It's really an amazing system. I love those modern influences. I took a lot away from that, and see things we need to do with our combat system."

Oh... hell yes! I wonder which one it will be, like the aRPG-style comedy/spoof on PC/Xbox/PS2/Mobile, or an MMX/Grimrock-style return to roots style dungeon crawler? Either way; yes please! Very Happy

Noice! Me Gusta

PS I don't really like when they put numbers in titles... I wish they just used a different title.. Something like "The Bard's Tales: Fallen Skies" lol..well, you get the idea.

So the inspiration for their combat system is coming from one of the most simplistic and idiot proof collectible card games ever created? That's a bit worrying/weird.

It says 4 so Im pretty sure it continues where the third one left off Smile Imo there are only 3 bards tale...that other freak he released was shite (personal feeling bout it...might be good if you like that kind of game).

However, the first 3 are among THE best games ive ever played.

I played the first two (in CGA on an Amstrad PC1512) to *death* when I was a kid, absolutely loved them, but yes.... I also loved the Xbox/PC re-imagining, not least of all because of the wicked humour -- and the Beer song that I sing all the time, to my wife's lament Very Happy

Good news Very Happy
I've only played the 2004 playful 'spin-off' (which I enjoyed a lot), but whatever this is, I trust Fargo. He can have all my babies. Fingers crossed Razz

Oh fuck yes. This is the one game that is insta-backed for me. Not counting Telengard, Bard's Tale was my introduction to CRPGs back in 85 or so. I've been waiting a long long time for this. And frankly, I'd love to see combat in a game like this done similar to how it is in Frozen Synapse. Simultaneous turn-based but with a fantasy setting.

If I had been born with a vagina, it'd be dripping wet right now.

I have a feeling this won't do as well on Kickstarter as WL2 and Numenera. But maybe it'll bring in more backers than it otherwise would have now that InXile have proven themselves with WL2.

Kind of wish it was hack and slash after WL2's terrible turned based combat, like the last bards tale.

Can't wait!. Years ago I bought Bard Tale 3 Thief of fate even though I didn't even have a PC to play the game on. I would just read and re-read the manuals staring at the disk wishing I could play it lol Very Happy

I do prefer the original BT games to the change of style of the last game.

What else would it be?

Edit: its not a sequel to the one from 2004 but rather the original series.

Thats why this project is (atleast for me) very very interesting. However, I hope it doesnt turn into something its not. I want it to be kind of like the original ones only with kickass graphics and not have too much changes.

Kickstarter launches next month. First "promo screen" released.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-05-18-inxile-reveals-the-bards-tale-4-kickstarter

"While development of The Bard's Tale 4 will lead on PC, inXile is considering a console version"

"This one lends itself to console even more so than the isometric ones of course, but yeah, it's something we're going to keep heavily in mind of course, but we don't like to think about it too much, because when we're making our day to day decisions about how to make it the best that it can be, we don't want people to think we're making any trade-offs for the PC."

mother fuckers have consoles on their head from the get go on this one and probably for everything from now on. You just can't get away from fucking consoles. If they make a pc game and don't sell, they say pc piracy, we're going consoles next. If you DO buy a pc only game, they say great, why don't we go consoles next for even more cash.

It's a first person dungeon crawler, I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that it would be a perfect fit for consoles. The Wizardry series has long since been a console staple in Japan, along with countless similar titles - like the annoying-as-fuck but still amazing; Etrian Odyssey on DS/3DS. These days there are more FP dungeon crawlers, especially tile based ones, on console and handheld than there are on PC. As long as it's a great game, I care little whether it's "considered" for consoles. This isn't something that would suffer because of it, except for visuals/performance Smile

Problem is, going full PC you have no limits on game design, control, complexity, UI. No limits at all. Going consoles and especially controllers, there are a myriad of very fine decisions that most of us don't even know or realize at first. Like Diablo 3 on consoles. Camera is just a bit lowered down. Enemies are just a bit more stupid. Just a bit with lower numbers because they say a PC diablo gamer focuses on his suroundings and a console diablo player looks at his character and can't react as quickly on large numbers of enemies. Tiny, but many things like this that influence the entire gamedesign and gameplay. Usually for the worst.

We don't know now, if there will be problems. But there's now a very real chance. I'm curios how their kickstarter will fare now. With Wasteland 2 they got money. They had the name, the reputation. Right now they released the game. A lot of people didn't like it. Then they announced the game on consoles which at least on their forum last time i checked, divided people, those who didn't care and those fearfull it will consolise future games. We'll see
