While I cannot say much about its features yet, what I can tell you about it so far is that it will allow you to fly many different ships, it will give you an all-new interface to manage large fleets, and it will give you full freedom when building stations from individual modules.
I'm just happy Egosoft is still afloat after that disaster of a game. Because despite of all its fault, I still have faith that they will get their shit together for the next game.
They're probably still active and patching Rebirth with some fixes now and then but I guess the core gameplay issues aren't as easily remedied even if the game is likely in much better shape now than it was on release.
Going to wait until after X4 is released and see what the opinions on the game are before picking it up though, it sounds like they've listened to some of the more common complaints such as being stuck with the "SKUNK" or what the ship was called again instead of having a selection of actual ships instead of one ship and a simplified loadout of different weapons and upgrades.
Stations weren't all that fun to explore either and the NPC model variety could be improved but that's fairly minor compared to the bigger issues the game had.
(Simplified/streamlined or how to put it, accessibility doesn't have to be bad but the game shouldn't need to be dumbed down completely either.)
Whatever they are planning to do, and whichever idea they have in mind, they must first put X-Rebirth's code along with all the studio's computers that were unfortunate enough to get in contact with it inside a 1k degrees Celsius crematorium. It's the only way that could guarantee a sanitized environment, completely getting rid of the nastiness, like the gaming version of The Thing.
Surely they learnt their lesson with the shemozzle that was Rebirth. If not then fuck 'em i say.
Egosoft have shown in the past that they are more than capable of delivering a quality product and with the likes of Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen out and about they know it has to be good to compete.
At least they supported Stillbirth a LOT. That shows commitment at least. So I guess if they care about their audience they will learn from that failure.

Has there been any details about their finances, were there any layoffs after that catastrophe of a game etc.? They're pretty small-time so this game would seem like their make or break moment. X is their only IP, after all.

I personally have no idea, but knowing they have such a small team, Deep Silver probably has enough to fund them for another game. I mean they have funded them for all those patches we got post-launch of X3 & beyond ( I never played X1 or 2). They even funded them to keep patching X-Rebirth despite the initial wave of refunds. Either Deep Silver have deeper pockets then I thought, or they have tremendous faith in the X series and Egosoft. Or X-Rebirth managed to break even or better over its course.
But yea, they definitely cannot fail again, space games just don't have much momentum right now, most just don't really grab the spotlight and the only true seller isn't even near release yet (Star Citizen). A great X game will sell really well because there is a large market out there, and no one has yet to compete with X at all.
If you say x-stillbirth three times, your posts will come back
I was just trying to KILL IT WITH FIRE! ebirth
Haha it was a g̶l̶i̶t̶c̶h̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶m̶a̶t̶r̶i̶x dupe thread, I had to remove it since we already had this older one. The Humps' cutting-edge tech from 2001 sadly doesn't allow us to merge threads (nor to move posts from one thread to another), one can only..kill stuff with fire *looks for Rebirth*
From memory X-rebirth actually sold more than any of the X series. Now that they've burned the good will of the X community, no doubt they will try to return to form only to find fans not buying their 'improved' new game because of the last game. They'll then believe that X-rebirth was actually the best game and X5 will be a derpy as fuck console game again (but best seller for them) and the cycle repeats.

You give people too much credit. Fans will purchase X4 no matter how burned they've been.
It looks like they see Roberts hoovering in a bunch of cash on his bullshit, so they are trying to tap that source. Like Star Citizen they are going for fully rendered cockpits/bridges, station areas, and a seamless transition between them.
It's hard to tell how much of X3 they will be able to add back into what seems like a Rebirth base. I did not play Rebirth, but he kept referring to it in a tone of 'we know a lot of people didn't like rebirth, but there were some things we learned from it' type thing.
Quick notes from the presentation:
Release in 2018, may or may not use early access.
Redesigned map interface to make it easier to access most in game information (to make the game more newb friendly)
Stations are all modules (docks, life support, production, refining, ect.)
Research mechanic to unlock station modules and some other techs (transporters).
Transporters allow instant travel into any ship in your fleet.
Npcs will custom build their own stations
Station modules will be researched by "scanning" (other things/stations(?))
There are built up core systems with "highways" and rural systems without them.
The Economy:
Npcs can only build more stations/ships if there are resources available.
Npcs will prioritize station building based on supply and demand
There will be no artificial drains on products to create demand, all resources must be used to produce something higher on the chain.
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
