Being of a different generation than most of you gentlemen, one finds oneself immersed in the last war that actually required fighting, I am, of course referring to the Second World War, or, if you prefer WWII, now, as one progresses in years I do find most games most tiresome and somewhat lacking in detail. Hence, one would wholeheartedly embrace a game that reflects a true depiction of the history of WWII.

One has tried many games, most of them, I fear to say are rather lacking in detail and rather erring on the 'American side'. Whilst we can all applaud the undoubted input of our cousins across the sea, I do feel the heroic efforts of us Europeans, of whom, it has to be said, the inferno of the Second World War, fell squarely upon our collective shoulders, am I wrong fellow Europeans? I think not. On this premise I hereby decry you to suggest a game one may play, that doth embrace the sacrifice made by our collective forbears, whilst of course embracing the effort made by our somewhat more 'pedestrian' and 'trigger happy' brethren across the Atlantic.

After my blather I hope you have an inkling of what I am after? I do like Company of Heroes, but I do not like the American 'takeover', and, it has to be said the premise that our cousins won the war with no involvement from our stalwart Europeans forbears.

I eagerly await your most valued input dear fellows.

Will Men of War embrace my time and ease the urge for a satisfying, difficult to master, but not overly complicated game, but, set the scene with appropriate ambience and scenery for the greatest conflict in history?

Once you play and master it, Company of Heroes will seem like a kids game

Hearts of Iron 3 with Black Ice mod.

It just doesn't get any better than that.

I have Hearts of Iron III in my Steam list, yet to play Mr. Moshi. However, one was requesting a game of a somewhat lesser ilk, something along the lines of Company of Heroes, but, as I said without or with the parameters as above.

One is abundantly enamoured with the suggestions above, and, it has to be said one is sufficiently satisfied to accept the opinions of this fine public forum as one would accept the opinions of ones' peers.

Have you played Company of Heroes with Blitzkrieg mod? If you love seeing high fidelity urban warfare, realistic intense tank battles, enjoyable turtling and offensive pushes; I'd say this would be the RTS to play. Vanilla CoH is rubbish without the mod IMO.

Panzer General, PG2, PG: 3D Asault, PG Scorched Earth, Allied General, Pacific General, Panzer Corps, Order of Battle: Pacific, Close Combat series, Blitzkrieg series (the original BK is considered vastly superior to its sequel), Codename Panzers Phase One and Phase Two (and you could try Cold War, too if you are at it, as it does have a good story and gameplay), Rush for Berlin/Rush for the Bomb, Hearts of Iron series, Arsenal of Democracy, Darkest Hour, Soldiers: Heroes of the WW2, Faces of War, Sudden Strike, Desert Rats vs. Afrika Korps, Stalingrad, Mockba to Berlin, R.U.S.E., War Leaders: Clash of Nations, War Front: Turning Point, Making History 1 and 2, Talvisota: Icy Hell , Strategic Command series, Unity of Command, Gary Grisby's: World at War, Commander: Europe at War, Combat Mission series (Afrika Korps, Barbarossa to Belin and Beyond Overlord). Panzer Tactics HD, Theatre of War series, Battle Academy.

You can find more at:

http://slitherine.com/games

and at:

http://slitherine.com/games

But the ones I've listed are the easier ones. Some are historically accurate, others are not, but all offered me countless of hours of fun.

The Men of War series is indeed a great one, even if a bit buggy. Start with the first ones, they aren't so hectic.

Edit: Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 and Faces of War are also excellent, as mentioned above.

What blackdochia said, but I would also add some games that you might find at Matrix Games related to WWII:

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/

Also take notice that most of the games on Slitherine and Matrix are TB and not RTS (like MoW, CoH or HoI)

My thanks for the many replies, please keep them coming. At the moment I am playing Company of Heroes 1, I also have COH 2, but I have to say, I do not like 2. Not really sure why, it just does not 'grab me'. Two questions about COH 1.

1. Is there a way to play the British or Commonwealth forces?

2.Is there a way to subtitle the random speech in the game? The yanks talk crap (literally) and I really cannot understand what the chuff they are saying.

Thanks

COH 1 original is only with americans. The expansion Opposing Fronts has 2 campaigns, one with Germans and one with Brits. Codename Panzers Phase One has three campaings and a shorter bonus one i think ? Don't remember exactly. Russians, Germans are among them. Phase Two has the North Afrika campaign, playing italians if i remember right.

1. (TB) Unity of Command (very simple to play, hard to Master, good AI)
2. (RTS) Close Combat series (CC5 from the classics, there is a gazilion mods available, Africa, Stalingrad Finland, Berlin fall etc. The most recent one is something that ends in Caen so normandy again)
3. (RTS) Faces of war (as that Commandos vibe)--> and the follow up Men of War and Assault squad (co-op available in all of the series, I think)

Why not Sudden Strike 2 and the semi-legal Hidden Stroke 2,both will supply you with missions until the end of days (if you can work with the dated gfx)
