"Dragon Commander: Become The Dragon, Command The Empire"

"We’ve been thinking about a project like this for a long time, until we finally could wave off this dream project no more. The game blends together our favourite genres and themes, something that is not easy but also something that is very rewarding in the resulting gameplay experience,” - says Swen Vincke, Larian’s Managing Director and Game Director for DRAGON COMMANDER, - “We have role-playing, we have strategy, and we have dragons in such a detail that has never been seen in a game before. We feel like we’re breaking new ground, and we’re very much determined to surprise and impress the players with what we plan to offer!”
Disclaimer - we don't really talk the way it's written down here, it's just what seems to happen once we start writing pitch texts
Dragon Commander
Play Dragon Commander and become a mighty Dragon Knight who takes to the skies to wage all-out war. Burn your enemies and lead your armies, then plan your next moves on the highly interactive, tactical campaign map. Yours is the power of the dragon and yours will be the empire!
Be the Dragon
Take control of a great dragon equipped with powerful technology and obliterate all that stands in your way. Use magic, skill and cunning to win the day.
Take command
Build vast armies and lead them into spectacular real-time combat. Conquer the vast world of the Divinity universe, and see your dominion spread over the tactical map.
Become the Emperor
Forge alliances; seek out arcane magic; fund military technology; woo powerful princesses; torture innocent imps. Will you be remembered as Sergei the Cruel, or Swen the Wise?
Battle online
Campaign against your friends and show them you are the only one who’s worthy of the title of Dragon Commander!
Or in other words - plenty of strange people & creatures to talk to with plenty of choices to make, a big turn-based strategy map with all kinds of fancy units to move around and countries to invade, researching of technology & spells & dragon boosting equipment, the story of the first Dragon Knights (from the time Maxos was a very common word), and massive dragon combat featuring a combat system that's shaping up to be way cooler than anything we've ever managed on that front, way way cooler. It has Steampunk, it has fantasy, huge areas to do the dragon combat in and lots, and I mean lots, of enemies to destroy. It obviously also has a single-player storyline, but there will be options to play multiplayer campaigns against one another which should be quite a lot of fun.

Meanwhile the people of that generation will call those guys relics, and not move with the times when everything is auto fucking.
There are some news from GamesCom. I'll just post what Myrthos from RPGWatch posted there.

The following non-English sites have reported about Larian's recently announced Dragon Commmander.

What the complete package will provide can currently not be said as the game is still far away from production and many items still await their implementation. The release will take place sometime next year, a publishing partner Larian does not have - the game from which they had long dreamed of will be self-financed.
What is shown definitely makes you want more, even the Steampunk style works very well. The level of detail of the landscapes in the early demo, according to the developers, was still significantly below what will actually be possible, but overall quite pleasing. Quite spectacular was the battle when two fleets clashed and the anti-aircraft batteries of all units were firing from all turrets. (Translation by me).

The great surprise of the day. [...] Dragon Commander plays out in successive stages: first, a role-playing phase during which the story develops inside the aerial base of the player; then a strategic phase, which plays like a Risk-like board game enhanced with Magic The Gathering cards; and finally, a real-time combat phase where the player controls a dragon equipped with a jetpack. [...] It works really well: aerial battles feature tons of units, shots are fired all around you, yet the action remains clear and your units easily manageable. (Translation by Larian Studios).

We met developers really passionate about their game, and what a game! A true gem, full of ideas! [...] The graphics and visual effects are beautiful. [...] As a dragon, you can give orders to your units, choosing to lead frontal attacks or sneakily attack your enemies from behind. [...] Add to all this an expertly crafted sense of humour, a hot skeleton princess and a 4-player multiplayer mode, and you get a game to really look forward to. (Translation by Larian Studios).
And here are the direct links to the whole articles if anyone is interested:
What to expect from a dragon with a jetpack. The concept alone is already completely over the top, but it is done in an aweseome way. Still Dragon Commander has much more to offer, which is a very good designed game principle that promises quite a bit of fun. Friends of both strategy and roleplaying games should keep their eyes on this game.
There are also a bunch of screenshots. I think GameInformer is the best place to see them as they have all the screenshots shown so far I think.
I'm actually quite happy to hear that you can play the battle yourself with the dragon and the strategy part of the game is mostly if you don't want to do that. I always wanted a game that would top or at least have dragon combat and flying mechanics as good as they were in Drakan. This part was pretty limited and not so fun in Divinity 2 and they did say the same thing and now they'll try to change that. I have faith in Larian and I don't think these are just lies. Now show as the GamesCom demo too, damn it!
Role-playing phase+ strategic phase + real-time combat phase..It surely looks like an ambitious project, but why not, if done right mixing genres can be a winning move; at least it's something different from the usual

Isn't that another reason why we love Larian? They try to innovate, they try different things, they make the games they like and have fun while making them.
