Aspyr Media is remaking Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Quote:
First announced at the Sony PlayStation Showcase event on September 9, 2021, the game will be made by Aspyr Media, which had previously ported Knights of the Old Republic to iOS devices, and it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 console at launch and will come to PC at a later date.

The game is still in early development at this time, and is intended as a faithful one-to-one remake of the original game from the ground up.

I do wonder how the gameplay will be. Just finished both Kotor1 and 2 and i truly doubt this will have gameplay like those or the whining would be endless and maybe rightly so.

If they mostly kept the formula that made it great but overhauled the gfx like they did with RE2 I'd be happy.

Fuck remakes. How braindead can a dev be to not just come up with a new story and some new locations.

it's not about a lack of creativity or anything, it's just about what is most likely to make money.

and I don't think any dev would choose to remake a game. that must fucking suck no matter what game.
it's like having to copy a popular book that someone else already wrote, but you gotta change shit to update it which will piss people off no matter what, and you can't really be creative with anything you do as it's already defined by the original

publisher forcing them for sure.

money money money, is all you need!

They might change things to suit swtor changes. Less self insertion is fine by me regardless, but especially so if its a character that has a canon appearance

Not at all. NightDive for example are genuinely passionated about it.. I would be too if i worked in the industry, but it would have to be a game i myself was passionate about at some point, something i've dreamed of seeing a better version of. You have to be a real fan of it, otherwise there's no way you will produce a good product.

No idea if these people are genuine or not, but it doesn't give me any good vibes that they have a person on who said KOTOR wasn't really a favorite game + she's into Disney Star Wars and goes after fans who aren't. I would never want a person like that on the team if i worked on a remake.

It will need more than a simple GFX upgrade, or it's gonna feel sooo empty. Like the Mafia remake.

It definitely sounds like another scenario à la Bloodlines 2/System Shock 3 where the developers lack the necessary experience and skill set to pull off such delicate and iconic projects. Oh well, thankfully the original game is perfectly playable on modern systems and is just as enjoyable as it was back in the day, so there's that. They would have ruined it anyway Cool Face

You do have to wonder why these big companies keep doing this since in the end it just ends up costing them way more money then if they just hired a competent dev team to start.

Creative industry be like that. I get a lot of "clients" that "pfft" at my rates, then I send them to Sanjeet to get the prices they want, almost everytime they come back running after they see what cheap looks like.

Not sure Saber is much of an improvement over Aspyr but I guess we will find in in 2-3 years.

It's been put on hold indefinitely (ie. it's been 99% cancelled).

The beauty of KotOR is that (unlike KotOR 2) it doesn't need heavy fixing, but there's still neat stuff available when it comes to visual enhancements. The mandatory ones are the widescreen fix: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic#Widescreen_resolution and the Community Patch: https://deadlystream.com/files/file/1258-kotor-1-community-patch/

(There's also the Restoration Mod which adds interesting features and content, but I didn't install it when I replayed the game two years ago so I can't provide any feedback)

Then you just grab whatever graphical enhancements you like. HD characters: https://www.nexusmods.com/kotor/mods/1282 , HD Cutscenes: https://www.nexusmods.com/kotor/mods/1306 , HD Menus: https://deadlystream.com/files/file/1159-kotor-high-resolution-menus/ , Skyboxes: https://www.nexusmods.com/kotor/mods/69 , Stars: https://www.nexusmods.com/kotor/mods/41 , Weapons: https://www.nexusmods.com/kotor/mods/104 , the AI Enhanced textures from this guy: https://www.nexusmods.com/users/28882540?tab=user+files and so on (long list is long, just check the Nexus and Deadlystream Razz).

tbh i didn't like the restoration of kotor 2 either. It feels unfinished without for sure, but it feels very unpolished AND unfinished with. Dialogues that aren't voiced/context and/or leads nowhere. It was a weird experience.

This thread is about the "indefinitely on hold" remake. Use the KoToR1 thread.
