Okay, everybody says get an external USB DVD drive or an IDE2USB adapter to get around Starforce 3.
I have an external USB hard drive. It has a 100 GB IDE drive in it, so what would happen if I took that hard drive out of the external case and put in an internal IDE DVD drive? Would that be the same as having a USB DVD drive?
And if It does work, will the game run if I burn the small MDS mini image to a RE-writable DVD?

It's still a hard drive whichever way you play it, you still need to use a virtual drive to mount the image, so no, sorry.

Okay I answered my initial question.
It works fine.
Used the FR Snake release of SSCT (mdf)
used the 38k mini image (mds)
gave them the same file name.
took the HDD out of the external case, put in my NEC 3520A DVD writer.
Installed Alcohol120 1.9.5 2802
Put in a blank DVD-RW
told alcohol to burn the .mds
1.0X speed
RMPS ON
also, in alchohol preferences --> emulation, set the last checkbox ON (RMPS emulation)
burned
Installed the game
clicked game exe, was told to restart, so restarted.
click game exe, told to enter serial
Used the serial 2Q....
Checking disk.....(said a little prayer)
BAM! Game WORKS!
w00t for me!
Hardware:
NEC 3520A DVD Re-writer
Disk:
TDK 4.7GB DVD-RW 2x speed compatible (approx. 2 years old)
Release:
Splinter_Cell_Chaos_Theory_pour_PC_par_Snake
and
scct_mini_image (the one that comes with SF Nightmare)
Software:
Alcohol 120% Retail, version 1.5.2 Build 2802
Cost:
0.00$ US
Time:
an hour to burn the image
a day to download all the necessary stuff
a week reading all the posts on nforce and other various sites around the web.
I didn't install the 1.01 patch because it looks like it only addresses multiplayer issues, so it's pointless to my situation.
I hope this helps, as I would assume more people have external USB hard drives than external USB DVD drives.
