As was noted on another gaming site, a polish programmer has made a "fan expansion" upon the original Dungeon Keeper, updating it to support higher resolutions and using the original game data.
It's called Dungeon Keeper Fan eXpansion
I'd advice you to download it before the lawyers hear about it as I imagine with rps writing about it, it's not long for this world.
The sourcecode repo is
Looking into it, theres quite a few remakes going on.
Such as Open Dungeons
Open DungeonKeeper
Natural Born Keeper
And Dungeon Digger But this one hasn't been actively maintained since 2008 :/
Enjoy digging deeper
Also I'd just like to voice my support for open source development, three cheers for open source and free software developers.

I love Dungeon Keeper, but I'm not sure I could go back now that we've got Dwarf Fortress. Non-existing graphics and horrible UI aside, the feature list is so huge and the possibilities so many that I think I'd find any DK remake lacking. If only they'd make DF proper 2D or even 3D, it would quite possibly be the most awesome game ever created.

Ah, Dungeon Keeper. Both it and Syndicate really deserve new sequels. Proper ones, not the type of travesty like X-COM suffered.

I cant get that KeeperFX to run on my rig. After selecting the map or area on the map, it just goes to desktop.

Even changing the settings had no effect for me, still doesn't run. Can't say I'm bothered, since I have working versions of both DK's already, but it would have been nice to run it at a higher resolution and stuff.

Got it working but the resolution is so terrible I couldn't see much, continously had to move the mouse around. Got sick quick.
would love a proper remake of this!

i tried playing this game for 7 minutes. the character models need some work. it's pretty low polygon. other areas of the game needs more polishing and fine tuning. the load time is atrocious. why does it install in the freakin' appdata folder? (C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Apps\Kalypso Media\Dungeons).
anyway, the game play is a bit confusing. i'll probably come back to it when i am in the mood to figure out what to do to play this 'game.'

necro time... but good news
War for the Overworld is a spiritual successor to the Dungeon Keeper franchise – Tech Demo Released
https://demo.wftogame.com/
http://download.wftogame.com/WFTO170.exe 82meg
Quote: | Subterranean Games is currently creating a spiritual successor to the Dungeon Keeper franchise, called War for the Overworld. Although this project is still in early stage, the developers have released a tech demo that can be downloaded from its official website. As with all tech demos, it’s kind of cool. However, it does not show much about the actual game.
Subterranean Games will launch a Kickstarter campaign for the game at a later date, and aims to take the Dungeon Keeper formula and improve upon it whilst keeping the core elements, and adding more ways to play.
Furthermore, the company is adding a lot to enable the player to choose how they want to play by adding a variety of dungeon and map-based mechanics. For example, in previous DK games, the only truly viable strategy was to turtle. Subterranean is adding components that will allow players to do other stuff if they want, but turtling will still bean option.
Naturally, in order to avoid any legal issues, Subterranean will not be using things, names and features owned by EA. This means that the original names and characters won’t be available. After all, that’s the whole purpose of creating a spiritual successor instead of a sequel, right?
Enjoy and stay tuned for more! |

Funny you should mention that, I redid D1 with KeeperFX not a month ago.
It still hold up, and the higher res support + scrolling for zoom really work like a charm.
Small PS: the original campaign is now harder, since they removed all "Transfer" secrets (except for those in the Bonus levels)
