Hey.

I'm looking for some new animes and would like to know what your favorite space/futuristic themed picks are?

Things i watched and liked include:

Knights of Sidonia, PlanetES, Cowboy Bebop, Arpeggio of Blue Steel

legend of galactic heroes, the 100+ eps tv show.
one of the most epic shows ever created, and pretty much the game of thrones of anime (although its older) , scope, story and characters-wise.

+1 for legend of galactic heroes, great epic anime, and you get used to it looking.. old Razz

hmm can't think of much else for space anime...

Futuristic is pretty broad so there's stuff like.. Ergo Proxy (postapocalyptic), Code Geass, Aldnoah Zero (some space too) and PSYCHO-PASS

Likot Mosuskekim, Woodcutter cancels Sleep: Interrupted by Elephant.

Don't watch Neon Genesis - it's crap Razz (there are multiple versions trying to give the ending some sense)

 Spoiler:

Ehhhhhh... it's one of those shows that you should have watched once because no show before it showed psychological problems at that messed up level.

1 and 2 are still amazing.

I disagree, Japanese authors have problem with showing emotions, higher psychology.
I watched an anime about a military team in power armors responsible with fighting people turning into super powered monsters. It was ultra gory. I had it with author's commentary where he said it was show about eternal love...
This was the point when I forfeited anime until friends told me to watch PSYCHO-PASS (in which the premise of latent criminals due to psychological trauma is really far-fetched idea IMO).

Sure but the point remains that it's still a unique anime in the subject matter it presented. All mecha anime always focussed on the action so that is why it was unique at that point (and still is, to a lesser extent).

The show just opens you up to watching some of the more "out there" stuff better than any other anime otherwise most people stick to Naruto/Bleach/One Piece/Fairy Tail etc etc.

1 and 2 are still amazing.

I agree some people might look for something more than your fast food anime after NGE. I just didn't like it, it was too convoluted for me and as it goes for other too - see "The End of Evangelion" and "Rebuild of Evangelion" (I know it's a reboot but it tries too redo the original to be more accessible). I didn't saw how the actions of characters in original series and most of things that happened lead to the ending episode.
And let's stop at this I watched it ~12-14 years ago and don't remember everything from it.

I actually watched NGE 15 years ago or so. From what i remember, Shinji was the original whiny emoboy. I think i liked the anime overall, but the main character was constantly wallowing in his "misery".

evangelion was fun and abstract the first time around, but in the end its just a very pretentious show with several endings and none being particularly satisfying.

loved it when i was 12, couldnt watch it again.
though i have to admit the battles and the soundtrack are still good.

i really recommend legend of the galactic heroes, while it also has some unavoidable anime clichés, alot of it is as well thought out and as unpredictable as some of the best us cable shows.
dont read up anything about it, there are some really huge spoilers.

since PlanetES is already in i might add " Space Brothers " < realistic (kinda) take on the space program.

Mugen no Ryvius < Several hundreds youths get trapped on a spaceship and have to get their shit together (Kinda Lord of the Flies vibe) Pretty dark but very good

Terra Formars < Insects evolved to some killing machines on mars, earth sends genetic altered humans to fight them and keep them away from earth ( gory as fuck)

Since you asked for space anime you COULD add all the Gundam "classics" (not the really new kiddo crap) and/or Macross (Macross Frontier was pretty dope)

Space Dandy < Kinda a parody, sometimes funny, sometimes silly still worth to watch.

Toward the Terra <- Dystopian space setting. Youths with specific DNA mutations get hunted and killed by the gov. Some underground resistance rescues our MC and heads(flee´s) towards terra Razz. Pretty good show

Jyu-Oh-Sei < Kids parents gets killed, kids get dumped onto prison planet. Need to learn to fight and climb the top in order to escape the planet. ( Lots of northern mythology used in this one)

Tytania <- Legend of galactic heroes clone. If you wanna experience the Logh space fights with newer animations you can watch those 24 eps, the story is pretty much shit though^^.

Heroic Age <- Several races called "Silver" "Bronze" and "Iron" tribe (Space Elves, Zerglings, Humans) try to follow the "Golden" tribe to the promised land. The humans are on the brink of destruction when a human baby , raised by the golden tribe , is discovered and supposed to help the humans out to find their place in the universe.

Pretty much a sci/fi mecha anime but not as hardcore mecha as gundam . I really liked it Smile

Those are the more space heavy anime (some more some less) . I could write myself to death if i were to add the "Futuristic" ones . Might do it later on...

Mujin Wakusei Survive
Pretty childish sometimes, including some annoying and retarded characters, but overall I still liked it very much. Basically kids stranded on a foreign planet, trying to survive.

Turn A Gundam
One of the Gundam series that doesnt have a strong connection to the UC timeline, so it can be considered standalone
