Chris Rock is the mastermind behind the upcoming "reboot" of Saw.
He will executive produce the story and concept he came up with, which is being turned into a script by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, the writers of Jigsaw ( Saw 8 ).
Saw 2, 3, 4 director Darren Lynn Bousman will direct.
The film has been described as a "reboot", but it's unknown if it's a "hard" one, starting from scratch. I'd say probably, since Jigsaw was already a "soft" reboot. Lastly, Tobin Bell's name is nowhere to be found (yet). So I think this will be a complete reboot, for real.
Quote:
Added longtime series producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules: “Chris wants to put his own spin on the Saw franchise in the way Eddie Murphy put a completely fresh perspective on buddy-cop films with 48 Hours. This new Saw is going to be an event film in the making for horror fans. It will have all of the twists and turns and hardcore layers that our fans expect directed by one of the masters of the craft, Darren Lynn Bousman. We can’t wait to get started.”

It's filming now. The writer said it's a soft reboot, taking place in the same universe as all the previous films, but it's not going to be a sequel to Jigsaw.
Also from what I've heard Bell won't be in it, for real.
There were two versions of the script or pitches or something like that, one with Bell, the other without, and the studio said no Bell, because they want to do something new.

From what I heard Rock pitched some story idea unrelated to Saw and the studio said "why don't we make this into Saw?"

A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.
SPIRAL stars Chris Rock, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson, and is produced by the original SAW team of Mark Burg and Oren Koules. The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Josh Stolberg & Pete Goldfinger.

Doesn't look good or bad to me this early but it would be good if:
a) they move away from Jigsaw (which I'm pretty sure they did, last I heard Bell wasn't asked to return because producers thought it's finally about time).
b) they move away from torture porn. If you haven't seen Saw 1 in a while, you will be taken aback if you rewatch it. It's actually not really torture porn, unlike all the sequels. Considering this will be a soft reboot, I hope they change the genre too.
c) it doesn't look as cheap as the last couple ones. 7 was shot in native 3D (it was that time of filmmaking), which is expensive and requires time and experience which these lower budget productions cannot afford, and 8 just had a TV production look about it. With Bousman returning, I think this will look better than those. Bring back the transitions!

True. They could just chain people to chairs give them saws and put Crhis Rock on a stage in front of them with 3 hrs of standup material and just film it in HD.
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube
This looks like a SNL sketch, in which Rock is trying to act serious, and L.Jackson has been brought in just to shout - "You wanna play games, motherfucker!?"
Why does everyone cast S.L. Jackson? Does he arrive at the set in a bus full of cocaine and hookers?
They want to hear him say his motherfucking lines in the motherfucking set.

His annoying squeaky voice.
Thats it. It's very noticeable, very there.
Hard to act with a voice like that.
You can't imagine him in serious situations.
It's just funny.

I liked hius comedy in the 90's. What does he even do these days? He was never a good actor, he's just "Chris Rock as a Cop, a Dealer, A Random guy crossing a street".
And that's ok. But just... don't act? I don't know about his writing, so let's find out, but I never bought him as an actor.
But seriously, what was the last thing he did, other than voice over?
