Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
It's a fucking travesty that noone made a thread for this game yet!
I firmly believe that this is one of the best games I've played in recent years.
It combines survival horror, with post apocalyptical scenarios in a roguelike setting. It's got a ton of skills, traits, abilities and even fucking magic - magic is very late game though most never see it.
One thing it lacked for a long time was graphics though, being primarily ASCII based. But some sweet tilesets have been made for it.
A lot of people felt that it still lacked something though to fully completely the immersion; sounds and music.
Well it's got that now, but in a fully unsupported and unofficial hacky kinda way.

Problem with that is that you have to compile it yourself to get it working. I've solved that for you though!
BEHOLD! A READY MADE ARCHIVE WITH GRAPHICS SOUNDS AND MUSIC
Now play some, who knows what you'll see, who you'll meet or how you'll die.
Will you mutate into a tentacled beast from beyond?
Will you use the power of SCIENCE! to augment your body and become a posthuman? Will you discover a portal to R'lyeh and barter with a great old one?
Or Perhaps build your own roaming fusion powered tank and fortress?
Or fall into an ant pit and die.

Cata DDA is pretty epic in scale, it probably rivals Dwarf fortress now. It's still kinda unknown, mostly because of its rocky beginnings/craptastic NPC bugs.
'tis my goto when I feel like an actual survival game and building deathbuses out of spikes. These days, there really isn't anything better than this.

Being the elite, I still prefer to play in ASCII. It's a lot easier to identify what is going on and Cataclysm is no exception.

I don't get why tiled roguelikes can't at least use animations and what not to spice shit up. Nearly every rogue with tile support looks like some mspaint level garbage and is completely static. BLECH.

I've always wanted some sound for Cata though, I just hope it's not too repetitive and the sound samples are mastered properly. The video sounds pretty solid for the most part.
Thanks for the compile, that shit is always a huge pain.
You should probably change the default options so that it doesn't boot in 640x480 and stupid shit like capitalization required for Y/N .. and sfx being 0 volume.

O_O

Thanks.

I really like roguelikes and this had fully avoided my sight.

Cool, thanks for doing the compiling. I've played this a few times before and really enjoyed it even in ascii only, I never realised there was graphics and sound mods.

It's my day off today so I now know what i'm filling the day up with, me being eaten by zombies probably Razz

Protips for newcomers:

Step 1. Get the nightvision perk at character creation; it allows you to see 2 squares in the dark which is stupid helpful for stumbling around stealthily.
edit: Step 1a. Get a backpack ASAP, or at least source something with a bunch of pockets, or you won't be carrying shit.

Step 2. Use windows and bushes so you can get a free hit on zombies. Secure a shovel (makeshift or otherwise) and dig some holes and use them in the same fashion for an escape plan.

Step 3. Always keep your morale positive where possible (recommend using an mp3 player with battery, toggle it on and off where required) or your skill gain will be limited.

Step 4. It's been awhile but last I checked, making spears out of sticks and throwing them is probably more effective than most guns are, until mid/late game. They're silent and are effective on everything except the largest zombies, bows are a fair option too but a little harder to put together.. and even rocks can work.

Step 5. Don't fuck with spores. You'll die unless you're wearing a good mask, even if they seem harmless.

Step 666. Make an active effort to check the condition of vehicles using x (I think?) to examine them (or e directly). ^ is drive if you're in the seat.
Eventually you'll find a bike (even a bicycle lol) or something that isn't completely beat up and it'll get you out of so much trouble. There's always the option of fixing one up yourself but you need to source tools and spend some time reading books (not a bad option if possible.)
Proceed to spend the rest of the entire game turning it into your personal 18 wheeler headquarters with spike plating and gun turrets. Don't drive too fast on the road, if you see patches of dirt, it's probably a stack of landmines, which only an armored car will probably survive.

Step 7. Keep a small amount of cocaine and the hardest drugs on you at all times. Sometimes you just gotta run! Cigarettes/cigars work too but when you're in a pinch you'll need to OD on everything at once. SPEED!

Congratulations, you are now a bonafide survivor of the cataclysm! .. I probably forgot some stuff but there you go.
edit: like [B]utchering every corpse you come across so that you can turn animals into something edible on a regular basis.

I rediscovered this recently (had 100% forgotten of it's existence) when Quill18 started playing it.

Awesome game Smile

This time I did not blow up in a minefield Razz

I'm already several days in, killed dozens of zombies and gotten my evac shelter nicely stacked with stuff.

Can easily see this game has near infinite possibilities for restarting it. The amount of 'classes' and character generation options are crazy.

I watched Mathas giving it a go a little while ago. Looks like Dwarf Fortress Adventure mode on steroids. Will definitely give it a go, but right now I just don't feel up to the challenge to learn a whole new ASCII game. Smile
