Quote:
We inform Italian and EU citizens that in the town of Gangi there are old houses that will be granted free of charge to those who request them.
The request may be submitted both by companies who want to transform the houses into hotels and from individuals for their own private use.
Those who will be assigned the free houses have to bear the expenses for the transfer of ownership and must undertake to present the project of renovation of the property within one year of purchase and complete renovations within three years.

So come to Gangi to see the available houses.

Haha! Yup, it's all true, there isn't any elaborate ruse as far as I know xD. Almost like a Simcity Italy, when you screw up and want to repopulate the ghost town as soon as possible Very Happy
The only problem could be the complex bureaucracy that reigns over here (and the renovation costs that are unknown), but at least 30 of them have been sold already and I think the others are all taken too.

Many old traditional towns of the south sadly are getting progressively emptier today because of the lack of services (no internet, transportation, or even basic needs sometimes), hope that such ideas can bring back some life since the places themselves are beautiful. Razz

I think it's a wonderful idea to help repopulate the idyllic, quieter, towns in the countryside. Give the abandoned homes away, on the proviso that people undertake renovations off their own back, and try to breathe some life back to these sleepy little towns. The sadness comes, as you say, with the lack of services which are largely to blame for the emptying of the town in the first place Sad

Still, beautiful town and such a wonderful prospect for someone with a bit of disposable cash and all the time in the world Very Happy

Isn't this a typical place where British and American pensioners would like to live? They just need some marketing then.
