I bought a Sony KDL46W905A last year.
Use this as our main TV for viewing and PS4. It has been an absolutely superb TV. Only one negative and that is the viewing angle is narrow and washes quickly. Not an issue as we sit in front to watch tv.
Highly recommend a Sony.

Can't go wrong with Sony. They have lowest input lag.
I got XBR55X850B last year and that thing is just amazing!

Need a new TV for the folks at home, after searching a bit online the best models within their budget (~500€) seem to be:
Samsung UE43RU7470
TCL 6-Series (R615, R617) (2018)
Hisense H8F
Any opinions on these? Or on another models within the price? It'll be used mostly just for watching... TV

I haven't used a TV in over 8 years
is it uncommon to not have a TV?

Well, I mean
do you have a projector?
I don't know how else you're gonna watch a movie if you got friends over
Or Netflix and chill'ing with a date
Hunkering down in front of your 24 inch PC monitor?

yup
my bed is on the other side of my desk
I either watch movies on my desk
or turn the monitor around and watch from the bed
also when I have a date over, we almost never watch anything

I would pick Samsung over those two. TCL is crap in general not to speak of it's SmartTV features and menus. What is Hisense?
If I were you I would check a couple of places in case you can find used LG OLED which is still under the warranty? Assuming that 55" is not too big for you.
I would also forget about SmartTV features on any of them and get NVIDIA Shield or AppleTV 4K for those purposes. LG's webOS is the only OS I would recommend though it's nowhere near as good as the Shield or AppleTV.

Sony and LG both have nice TVs, I have good experiences with both of them. Some Samsungs aren't that bad either. All these brands often have good deals so no need to pay the brand tax (these cheap deals are rarely on sale).
PC: Yes. Console: No.

all cheap tv's i have seen are shit, except those from samsung.
image quality much better, no input lag, best remotes, no shitty case like with grundigs for example and good sound. also most apps are already available (no twitch tho), also not like with grundig which has nothing except youtube.

Leaning towards the samsung one, but even smaller than that 43" screen since the old one is only a 32" samsung, which is starting to die after 10 years

I guess my HiSense is very shitty then. I must be blind since I believe it looks great!!! I must also be a moron for saving thousands over those awesome name brands.

I think the problem is that people don't have experience with actually good televisions, so they think their cheap ones are amazing because they can see more details than their cheap 1080p ones. It doesn't make them morons or blind, it makes them ignorant.

I agree, it's other things that do give those impressions for Todd.

High contrast ratio (OLED or higher LCD), good factory calibration, game mode performance, etc. Most of the cheaper 4K televisions just pump the pixels, which is OK—fine—but this generation is so much more than just pixels. At 55-65" sizes, I wouldn't say 4K resolution is not noticeable, but it's not nearly as noticeable in motion. On the other hand, HDR enhances the picture so much.

HDR is still a fucking mess "standard" wise, OLED is only good choice at the moment because it doest have backlight.

Im pretty sure they are not going to put gsync to normal OLED lineup, prepare to pay 200% extra for "gaming" gsync version.
