@Americans here:

Please tell me this is a fucking parody. It can't be that bad.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I spent a year in their "education" system. It really is that bad.

My US history teacher literally went through EVERY FUCKING QUESTION on the test...5 minutes BEFORE we took the test. No, not speaking figuratively when I say "literally". It really was right before the actual test. She gave us the actual answers to the actual question, one by one. And some kids still fucking failed.

I shit you not. High school freshman maths classes taught how to do multiplications and equations. Shit we learned in early elementary.

And I don't blame the teachers. They try their very god damned best with what they have. That history teacher? She did it because at the time, it was more important to give out good grades than actually teaching. If the kid got bad grades, it was assumed the teacher was doing a bad job, and their career would be at risk.

In high school we worked with an exchange program where two students swapped places. For example, a student would go to Spain and would take the place of a student that came here to our school.

Then the last two years of high school, we had two American students and the teachers were shocked. In high school we have 6 levels - from 1 (age 12) to 6 (age 1Cool. The American students were 18 but had to be put in level 3 (age 14-15) for half the classes and in level 1 for the other half.

Even worse, both students FLUNKED English (level 3) - soooo many spelling errors and the teacher didn't even count American spelling as wrong. Both students had terrible grades at the end of the year - even

On the other hand, the Belgian student that returned had top grades, thought classes were a joke and felt like he was back in second grade.

A teacher basically said:

"A high school student in the USA can be compared to a 15 year old in Europe, a US college student can be compared to a European who graduated from high school and US university student can be compared to European college student".

Thanks for the insights!

In conclusion: It really is that bad. No wonder they're producing all these self-entitled assholes and snowflakes in the US.

I often feel that we in Europe tend to go into the direction of the US. Our school introduced iPads 3 years ago and I feel like students become dumber with them. Not that they are bad tools per se, but the distraction they create is obvious even if you restrict access to internet services etc.

Competition between schools makes them more and more compelled to simply give good grates to be in a higher ranking. And of course students and parents know the school needs them to have these good grades so they feel entitled to them.

It's even worse when you see classrooms with these kind of tools and kids not being able to work with them. Yesterday on the news they showed a classroom, they had laptops and only 1 kid out of the 20 knew how to type properly... I mean wtf? Don't even get me started on how they use the tools...

Just digital for the sake of digital just doesn't seem worthwhile to me. And I do wonder what it does to concentration levels. My guess is that its not improving.

Well - I think that when I was at school everyone was doing homework for a different subject during other lectures at some point. Why waste your precious free time, when you can multitask during lessons Very Happy No laptops though.

A lot of teens don't have any illusions anymore and I have the feeling that they're more and more cynical about it, which is just sad. They just go for the most cost-effective way to get through their studies, find whichever bullshit job pays the best for the least effort invested and that's it.
It's not entirely because they're lazy or somewhat stupid, it's mostly cold pragmatism on their behalf; and I really can't begin to blame them for it.

The use of electronic devices should be limited as much as possible when it's not for fields directly related to them, most kids stuff themselves zith these devices all day long without needing to worsen it further.
Like Moprhineus pointed out, the worst thing about it is that they're not that proficient with electronic devices whatsoever, they just know how to use it for their limited use (this "optimization", once again). Ask one of them how to install a program without resorting to a derpstore of choice ? A lot of them will be at a complete loss.

Its pretty bad.
The whole underfunded teachers, them having to ask parents to buy classroom supplies because they are expected to buy supplies with their pay for the school room! But get paid SHIT to start with.
God knows how many packs of pencils, printer paper, notebooks, binders, markers, etc we bought for our kids to take to the teachers each start of a year.

Not to mention they work looong hours. My wife had a few teacher friends, their day didn't end until usually 9 at night. As they had to do random parent conference with upset parents their kids was failing. And having to grade homework and tests at home because they give them no time during hours to do it.

Then the normal vs charter schools. Public schools are so dumb-down and sterilized of any challenges and work essentially on the lowest common denominator needs to be a C student. So they can keep up with the ideal that if most students are getting 'an' education we can say the education average in america is awesome.
Well sure when the bar you set for average is can pass a test of eating paste and not choke on it..Well of course your 'we are scoring well in average grades across the nation' works.
Then charter schools are the 'pay to win' version of actual schools. Partially because they have the funding from parents that can afford it, mixed with individual attention if kids need it...and a bit of "You pay for the grade" ideal.

Don't get me started on AP(Advanced Placement) classes are basically the normal classes I remember in the late 80's early 90's. My daughter is not great at math. Yet she was put in AP Math because she was 'advanced' compared to the average kids, simply because she actually tried.

Every parent demands their kid be 'special', and if they are failing the teachers are clearly at fault. God knows how many PTA meetings me and wife went to which always had at least a couple self absorbed parents that was a mini version of that video. Entitled parents thinking the school 'owes' their kid an A because hes showing up.
I specifically remember one parent pulling the "Do you know who I am? I work on city council" bullshit. I wanted to go "And? My sons friends with your son, and he is a dumbass because you raised him to expect privilege. No matter where you work won't fix that".

there is a reason why the people flipping burgers at Miami airport are missing teeth and have shoes with holes, and this for people having jobs at the airport which should at least be decent salaries if you compare with european people working at airports Very Happy the land of the free is going down, and it will not be a soft landing!
