|
 |
Quote: | Paradox and Obsidian are set to announce “something” on March 15 according to a mysterious page that’s appeared.
On the Paradox site a personality test questionnaire has gone live with very strange questions such as, “A regular at your coffee shop was rude to you while you waited on line for your morning cup. How do you handle the situation?”. There are four questions to answer and when completed a score is dished out. This is no ordinary score, it describes your character. Perhaps you are “Psychotic” or just plain “Sensible”.
One completed a Twitch stream announcement is revealed for 15 March at 5PM Pacific time on the Paradox Twitch channel
It’s unclear what exactly the announcement could be but based on the fact it’s Obsidian, who has worked with Paradox on Pillars of Eternity and the the type of questions, it’s likely some sort of RPG.
Paradox acquired White Wolf publishing from CCP in October last year so perhaps it’s related to Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines which was created by Troika back in 2004. Former Troika co-founder Tim Cain is currently an employee of Obsidian which could mean something Vampire will be announced. However, Paradox has denied this on their Facebook page stating, “We can confirm that it’s not World of Darkness-related.”

I used to admire Obsidian until I woke up and realised they've never made a game that I really liked much - and most of the decent ones have massive flaws.
NWN2 is probably my favorite of theirs, and that's much more about loving D&D than their frontloaded storylines.
I know most people are incredibly fond of them and consider them a kind of underdog to protect and cherish.
To me, they're just overrated.

I agree.. They do some things extremely well and some things really poorly, so in the end it's always a decent game but leaves you somewhat disappointed. I tend to like what they do with certain gameplay mechanics and sometimes with characters and writing, but often leaves me very unimpressed when it comes to overall design (and especially level design).

Meh, I've liked most of what Obsidian has done but after Chris Avellone left and Pillars turned out to be disappointing i kind of don't care anymore.

To a large degree they have always ridden on the reputation of Black Isle, despite never having really lived up to it in practice with anything they have produced themselves. And before CDPR turned up (along with the more recent indie/Kickstarter renaissance), Obsidian were basically the last great hope for (western) RPGs. That said, I do enjoy a number of their games, even though they are terribly flawed (technically or otherwise).

Yeah, which killed most of my enthusiasm. If you aren't going to get Obsidian to use the WoD license, then WTF are you going to do with it? Unless CDPR announce something at E3, I doubt we are going to get anything decent out of it.

I'm skeptical about the Obsidian now. I mean Pillars was a commitment they had to deliver a few years ago, with that out of the way they are now making a F2P multiplayer action game.
Without Chris Avellone, what could they possible work on now that would remind people what made Obsidian great?
Will we even see good RPGs from them anymore? It seems to me in recent years the western RPGs are now better done by guys in Europe with CDPR and Larian, Bioware and Obsidian are no more.

Current Bioware over Larian
1 and 2 are still amazing.

Larian still makes RPGs, Bioware don't.

Obsidian has been working with the Pathfinder IP for a small game (mobile card game). I wonder if they'll next start working on a full-fledged RPG based on Pathfinder.

Don't! You will only get disappointed. |
Too late now, the damage is done. Just hearing the name has automatically enabled my iwantobelieve engines as well
(All jokes aside, alas, that is truly an unlikely scenario. I'm also surprised that it has nothing to do with the World of Darkness universe either..I imagine we can only wait and see).
In any case, like Lolo said, I'm only really interested if it's a role playing game. So far the Obsidian crew, despite the changes over time, has never disappointed me in that regard.

Maybe it's "just" PoE 2, since Paradox was also publisher for the first part.

RPG in Pillars engine with someone else in charge of writing, and I'm a happy camper.

Obsidian needs Avellone.
I hope it's Beta Directive in which you play a guy called Michael Horntom and is totally not related to a Sega owned title that kinda looks the same.

And please don't let Sawyer be the lead developer or director or whatever. He's too anally retentive about getting combat just as he wants it but fuck man I do not play Obsidian games for the combat. Unless it's Alpha Protocol because combat there was fun and you got to feel like a bad ass kung fu pistol agent.
But balance issues in a single player game is like not a big deal to me. Sure go ahead fix combat issues, but after you've polished the plot and the world and so on. Combat is low prio.

This. They should let Tim Cain have the lead.
